Pauri 8

In first and Second Pauri Dhan Dhan Siri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is telling us about How living under His(WAHEGURU/LORD/GOD) Hukam is important. So we are told to live under HIS WILL. In the third Pauri- Guru Ji is describing all the different ways humans sing His Praises. God, the Superpower is recognized by every body based on the level of knowledge they have about Him. In forth and fifth pauri Guru Ji ponders over Naam Simran and Contemplation. Then in sixth Pauri Guru Ji is telling us about how we can aspire pure knowledge and understanding by listening to the Guru's Teachings. In seventh pauri Guru Ji tells us about the shallowness of worldly name and fame.

Pauries eight to eleven talk about- listening

Listening here doesn’t limit to ek kan naal andar te dujey to baahar, it is like listening then following the Same- SATGURU DI AAGYAA SAT SAT KAR MANANAA…

suixAY isD pIr suir nwQ ]

By Listening/Hearing/Hearkening Naam(God's name)-the Siddhas, the spiritual teachers/guide, the heroic warriors, the yogic masters all came into existence. So a mortal becomes a perfect/great person.

suixAY poih n skY kwlu ]

By Listening Naam/Hearing/Hearkening Naam(God's name)-Whom death cannot even touch, those came into existence. so if we don't want to get tormented by death, Guru Ji is suggesting us the way out, again and again. Death cannot torment us anymore.

O Nanak, the devotees are always in bliss, enjoying peace and happiness forever..

Re: Understanding JapuJi Sahib Pauri 8

Surinder ji,

A hectic time a work has ended. Now I can concentrate on this thread, which has been truly wonderful-- you are giving so much energy and thought to the meaning of Jaap Ji Sahib. Maybe anyone reading this has his/her hands on 4 or 5 different translations of bani. What you are doing is needed because it uncovers the essential meaning of each line and pauri.

The idea that by Listening all of creation is awakened, true knowledge is awakened, we are awakened, all comes to life, is a powerful thing.

Thanking you for myself and anyone else who is reading and finding spirit in this thread.

Re: Understanding JapuJi Sahib Pauri 8, 9, 10

Respected Saadh Sangat Ji,

in the pauries 8-11

Dhan Dhan Siri Guru Nanak Dev Ji tells us about the benefits of listening to Naam. If we remember from Previous Pauries, in the first and Second Pauri Guru Ji tells us about How living under His(WAHEGURU/LORD/GOD) Hukam is important. So we are told to live under HIS WILL, not ours. In the third Pauri- Guru Ji is describing all the different ways humans sing Waheguru's Praises based on their Knowledge about Him. In the forth and fifth pauri Guru Ji ponders over Naam Simran and Contemplation. Then in sixth Pauri Guru Ji is telling us about how we can aspire pure knowledge and understanding by listening to the Guru's Teachings. In the seventh pauri Guru Ji tells us about the shallowness of worldly name and fame. Now in eightth to eleventh pauri Guru Ji described all the results pertained by listening to His Naam.

me neech understands so far:

God is within us, and we are in God. So God is always there we only need to feel the presence, How we can do this, Guru Ji is telling us the way........

WE NEED TO LIVE ACCORDING TO GOD'S WILL(HUKAM).
Everything happenes under His Will.
He is the bestower of Naam.
We must remember Him and Contemplate on His Naam. We cannot rely upon better deeds only, as these cannot liberate us from the cycle of birth and death. To get His grace we need to bring ourselves in remebrance of the Graceful Himself. This is the only way out. We should sing His praises We should listen His praises WITH LOVE for Him and His Creation. Unconditional love needs to be cultivated. We must leave our own manmat and listen to Gurbani(Nirankaar/Word/Shabad) and believe it with 100% faith.

When we ask Guru ji to give us Naam Daan, Under His Grace we are provided with Naam, the understanding of Naam, It's Grace as well as the benefits. Guru Ji provides us with those qualities and thoughts that will help us to get the rewards of Naam Simran. Guru says and we listen and believe it and LIVE IT............
To recieve His Love the seva we need to do is Listen To Guru Ji with pure heart.........................................

humbly asking for everybody's forgiveness

Re: Understanding JapuJi Sahib Pauri 8, 9, 10

Surinder

It is wonderful that you use the terms Listing/Hearing/Harkening as you do in tranlsation. Because that is actually a very accurate portrayal of the experience we have. We make an effort to hear (Listening), then we receive (Hearing), and then we perk up and pay attention to the message (Harkening).

Thank you

Re: Understanding JapuJi Sahib Pauri 8-11

STANZA VIII

  • By communion with the Word one can attain the status of
    a Siddha,(1) a Pir,(2) a Sura,(3) or a Nath;(4)
    By communion with the Word, one can understand the mysteries
    of the earth, the supporting bull(5) and the heavens;
    By communion with the Word, the earthly regions,
    the heavenly plateaux and the nether worlds stand revealed;
    By communion with the Word, we can escape unscathed
    through the portals of Death;
    O Nanak, His devotees live in perpetual ecstasy, for the Word
    washes away all sin and sorrow.
(1). Siddha: A man endowed with supernatural powers.
(2). Pir: A Muslim divine or a spiritual teacher.
(3). Sura: Gods.
(4) Nath: Yogin - an adept in yoga.
(5) Dhaul: It is the fabled bull, supposed to be supporting the earths and heavens

Re: Understanding JapuJi Sahib Pauri 8-11

Both prayer and poetry.....

By communion with the Word - first saintly status - then with more communion with the word, encounter with the sacred bull (Satgur) - and then with even more communion, the heavens are revealed - and then with even more communion, the cycle of life and death is ended for us--- and then with even more communion, the gursikh lives in perpetual ecstasy.

In its poetic form, these verses form a composition so that the words move the listener forward to a series of awakenings. The meanings of the words are understood in relation to the direction that the prayer is designed to take us.

Re: Understanding JapuJi Sahib Pauri 8-11

Stanza IX

  • By communion with the Word, one can attain the powers
    of Shiva, Brahma and Indra;
    By communion with the Word, one can win esteem from all
    irrespective of one's past;
    By communion with the Word, one can have yogic insight
    with the mysteries of life and self all revealed;
    By communion with the Word, one can acquire the true import
    of the Sastras,(1) Smritis(2) and Vedas;(3)
    O Nanak, His devotees live in perpetual ecstasy, for the Word
    washes away all sin and sorrow.
1. Sastras: The philosophical treatises of the Hindus.
2. Smritis: The ancient scriptures of the Hindus.
3. Vedas: The earliest books of human thought.

STANZA X

  • By communion with the Word, one becomes the abode
    of Truth, contentment and true knowledge;
    By communion with the Word, one gets the fruit of ablution
    at sixty-eight pilgrimages;(l)
    By communion with the Word, one wins the honour of the learned;
    By communion with the Word, one attains the state of Sahaj;(2)
    O Nanak, His devotees live in perpetual ecstasy, for the Word
    washes away all sin and sorrow.
1. Ath-Sath: Literally these two words mean Eight and Sixty, i.e. sixty-eight. Nanak is once again making use of the Hindu belief that ablutions at sixty-eight places of pilgrimage bring purity from all sinful acts.

2. Sahaj: This term refers to the state when the turmoil of the physical, astral and causal worlds with all their enchanted panorama, are transcended and The Great Principle of life is seen within.

STANZA XI

  • By communion with the Word, one becomes the abode of all virtues;
    By communion with the Word, one becomes a Sheikh, a Pir
    and a true spiritual king;
    By communion with the Word, the spiritually blind
    find their way to Realisation:
    By communion with the Word, one crosses beyond
    the Limitless Ocean of illusionary Matter;
    O Nanak, His devotees live in perpetual ecstasy, for the Word
    washes away all sin and sorrow.
Guru Nanak, having tried to describe the fruit of communion with the Word, in the preceding four stanzas, now goes on to tell about the state of one who has attuned his will with the Divine Will which cannot be described, as His Will is beyond description. The idea of the controlling power in this world may be said to be the Divine Will. God Himself is Formless, but He assumed Form, He became the Word or Naam. It was from this Word that the various planes of creation sprang into existence, one below the other. He who practices the Word, i.e. withdraws his soul from the body and lets it be drawn up by the power of the Divine Music of the Word, can progress from one spiritual plane to another, until he reaches the very Source and becomes one with it. As he proceeds on the journey, his mental and spiritual horizons widen. His soul is cleansed of its past sins and freed from the binding chains of "Karma". It thus transcends suffering and escapes from the wheel of transmigration. Once one has attained true salvation, one can help others on the Path as well. Great indeed is the Power of the Word.
All this occupies stanzas XII to XV.

STANZA XII

  • None can describe the condition of one who has made
    God's Will his own;
    Whoever tries to do so, must realise his folly.
    No supply of paper, pen or scribe can ever describe the state
    of such a one.
    O, great is the Power of the Word;
    But few there be that know it.

STANZA XIII

  • By practice of the Word, one rises into universal consciousness
    and develops right understanding;
    By practice of the Word, one develops clairvoyance
    and transvision of the whole creation;
    By practice of the Word, one is freed from sorrow and suffering;
    By practice of the Word, one shall not go to Yama (1) after his death.
    0, great is the Power of the Word,
    But few there be that know it.

(1) Yama: it is known to the men who know of the world Beyond, that at the time of shaking off the mortal coil, souls are ushered into the other world by certain messengers who are the angels of Death (Yamduts). Sinners are badly treated by them, while the others are invariably led before Yama, the king of Death. But one who practises the Word escapes Yama altogether; for he is received at the Astral World by the Radiant Form of the Master and is escorted by Him to the spiritual planes.

STANZA XIV

  • By practice of the Word, one speeds on to the
    Higher Spiritual Planes unhindered;
    By practice of the Word, one gets into the spiritual plane
    openly and honourably;
    By practice of the Word, one escapes the by-paths of Yama,
    the king of Death;
    By practice of the Word, one gets in close touch with the Truth.
    O, great is the Power of the Word,
    But few there be that know it.

STANZA XV

  • By practice of the Word, one finally attains salvation;
    By practice of the Word, one leads one's kith and kin
    as well to freedom;
    By practice of the Word, one saves not only himself
    but when he becomes an Adept, many others whom he guides;
    By practice of the Word, one freed from desires, escapes from
    the wheel of transmigration.
    O, great is the Power of the Word,
    But few there be that know it.

Begum ji

We are having a little conversation here. Remarkable isn't it that each pauree is built using the same poetric structure. Repitition of a phrase over an over moves the ear and mind forward to a beat, and at each line we are moved to the next and higher level of spiritual unfolding.

The Japjui is so wonderful and Nanaak was so wise.
