Gurdwara Sis Ganj - Site of the martyrdom of the 9th Guru

gurudwara-sis-gunj-delhi.jpg

Built on the site where the Mughals beheaded Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1675, Gurdwara Sis Ganj commemorates the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur. It is situated in the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi. According to the legend, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded by Mughal emperor, Auranzeb, as he refused to convert to Islam. On his death, no one dared to pick up his body. Suddenly, sky became clouded, followed by a heavy downpour. Then, two of his brave disciples fled with his head and body. The head of the Guru was taken to Chakk Nanaki in Anandpur Sahib, while the body was taken to Rakab Ganj Gurudwara.

It was only a century later, that a zealous devotee, named Baba Baghel Singh, found this place and built a Gurdwara here. One can still see the trunk of the tree under which the Guru was martyred as well as the well where he took his daily bath while being imprisoned. In 1705, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib visited this shrine and appointed Bhai Gurbakhsh Das Udasi as its caretaker. It is also claimed that the central pedestal of this shrine is actually the oldest structure of Chakk Nanaki, which received Guruji's head, situated at Anandpur Sahib. This place is also known as Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib.

Today the 24th November 2012 is marked as the anniversary of the four shaheedis.

It was Aurangzeb who at the time sat on the Mughal Throne and held the post of Emperor of India. He sought to implement an extreme form of Islam across all of India, threatening to wipe out the indigenous religious traditions of the land. In desperation a group of Brahmins, who where high priests of the Hindu faithful, arrived from Kashmir at the court of the ninth Guru at Anandpur Sahib around early 1675. They sought assistance from Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, worried that their very existence and the religion of their forefathers were near expiry as a result of mass forced conversions taking place across India. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji declared that the only solution to the problem would require a great and holy man to sacrifice his life. Upon hearing this, the nine your old Gobind Rai replied to his father than there was none greater or holier than the Ninth Guru. And so, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji would be one of twenty two members of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s family that would attain martyrdom for the Sikh Guru’s fight for righteousness and religious freedom.

The Emperor was pleased at the Brahmin’s petition that should he succeed in converting the Guru of the Sikhs to Islam then high priests of the Hindu tradition were also willing to convert. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji travelled to Delhi accompanied by three chosen followers. At their refusal to embrace Islam, Bhai Mati Das was sawn in two pieces, his brother Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton wool and sat on fire while Bhai Dayala (elder brother of Bhai Mani Singh who would be cut limb by limb years later) was boiled alive in a cauldron. The Guru’s devotees, companions and beloved friends were tortured to death in an attempt to frighten the great saint into accepting Islam. After some days of the Guru’s persistent refusal, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was beheaded by an executioner in Delhi’s Chandni Chownk.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji describes the sacrifice made by the Ninth Guru in their autobiography titled Sri Bachitter Natak;

<CENTER>‘He protected the forehead mark and sacred thread (of the Hindus) which marked a great event in the Iron age. For the sake of saints, he laid down his head without even a sign.13. For the sake of Dharma, he sacrificed himself. He laid down his head but not his creed. The saints of the Lord abhor the performance of miracles and malpractices. 14. Breaking the potsherd of his body head of the king of Delhi (Aurangzeb), He left for the abode of the Lord. The whole world bemoaned the departure of Tegh Bahadur. The whole world grieved at the Guru’s departure, the gods hailed the Guru’s arrival in heavens.16’. (Dasam Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 131)</CENTER>

from http://www.nihangsingh.org/website/his-gurugobind.html

Just to add-

It is very important to note that this shaheedis were not just to save the hindu faith and religious freedom, In this day we would class it as the ultimate sacrifice in the name of Human Rights.

It should also be a reminder that the Guru stood for the kashmiri pandits even if he may not have followed or agreed with all their practices.

The point is that God is seen in every one by the Guru, regardless of caste, creed, colour or faith.
As in the following from page 376 by Guru Arjan Dev ji
<TABLE cellSpacing=5><TBODY><TR><TD>

</TD></TR><TR><TD>ਨਿਕਟਿ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੰਗਾ

Nikat jī▫a kai saḏ hī sangā.

The Lord is near and is the perpetual companion of man.

</TD></TR><TR><TD>ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਰੂਪ ਅਰੁ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੧॥
Kuḏraṯ varṯai rūp ar rangā. ||1||

Lord's Omnipotence is pervading all the forms and colours.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

We should all remind ourselves that God is in all and every 'ANG' body part is 'SANG' with the divine. When these angs can be taken off by force they still remain sang with the lord.

Waheguru

The same janeo (thread) that was rejected by Guru Nanak Dev ji was what the 9th Guru gave his life for !!!
WHY SO ??

Well, Guru Nanak Dev ji rejected and declined to wear it in order to propogate the true dharam by beginning to show how to live without the need for janeo (Bibek Buddi).
Whereas the 9th Guru demonstrated how to die with daya and bahaduri to uphold the dharmic principles of freedom.

We can't blame other peoples dharmic beliefs for landing them in trouble. We may not want to hold those same beliefs but we can't exclude them for having their dharm. BUT we must stop by ALL means any others that may be excluding by oppression.

In the day of today this doesn't just stop at religion. It is gender discrimination, racial, gays, society class...etc... infact, all inequalities faced by any being anywhere.
