AMRITSAR: A Special lecture on ‘Symbiosis of Bani and Bana in five Symbols of Khalsa’ was organised here today in the at Guru Nanak Dev University.
Dr. Nikky Guninder Kaur Singh, feminist writer and Sikh theologian in the Department of Religious Studies, Colby College (USA) delivered this lecture.
While delivering her lecture on Five K’s Dr. Guninder Kaur said that basic postulates of the lecture are simple interpretation as given by our preachers and some scholars are not suitable, in post modern era though somewhat good. She said these Five K’s are not result of the historical development of Sikhism, though revealed at a particular point of time in history rather Guru Nanak’s spiritual experience had the seeds of Five symbols of the Khalsa. So these symbols come from the inner experience of the Sikh Gurus, she added.
She said that these Five Symbols have been interpreted from social anthropological, historical stand point. But these interpretations not perfect, so we should ponder upon them again from the original source that is Gurbani. She said that these Symbols are both revealed and representative.
Further she stressed that Guru Gobind Singh recreated the Guru Nanak’s experience on the day of Baisakhi. She said that Creation of the Khalsa has similar reflection of Guru Nanak’s Bath into Bein river. During this event as Guru Nanak is given with Bani (Japuji) and Bana ( Siropao). She said that similarly Guru Gobind Singh revealed the distinctive dress and Maryada (Spiritual Discipline). Thus the Khalsa initiation becomes an exciting hermeneutic opening for Guru Nanak’s vision.
