We need to understand difference between Saints and Theologians, Scholars, Historians etc. All translations of SGGS are done by Scholars possessing only bookish knowledge. They read one part of SGGS and form a theory and apply it to another part of SGGS. We need to understand SGGS from Saint's perspective. Please study books of Saint Raghubir Singh Bir. He presents excellent meanings of SGGS and clearly explains lot of hidden concepts of Gurbani. Naam is Identity of God that is revealed in deep Guru-given meditation. So, its a chicken-and-egg problem. Without Naam Simran we can't know God and without knowing God we can't know Naam. So, the solution is to fall flat on the foots of a Saint like Raghubir Singhji or there are several others such as Gurus of RSSB. We need to understand, Guru Gobind didn't terminate the line of Sikh Gurus after himself. "Pargat Guran ki Deh" means those seekers who enshrine love for SGGS in their hearts will surely meet next Deh-Dhari Gurus who will teach them real essence of SGGS. Naam Simran as per Guru Nanak is indeed mental chanting of Wah-e-Guru mantra. It is also clarified by Saint Raghubir Singh who also shared the high exalted states of consciousness he routinely experienced after long intense practice of WaheGuru simran. Please read his books (Bandaginama etc).
