To say diwali is not a sacred festival is one sided or ignorance. Diwali is an Indian festival which started with human coming to age. Purpose of diwali was to prepare the residence for the winter and clean white wash or lip for the residents to sleep indoors in winter season.
Four major celebrations took place on diwali day and every function was celebrated with lighting the surroundings with lamps. Diwali means deepmala. It carries a significant meaning because there was no hydro and lighting many lamps carried a very significant affect. First such festivity took place when Ram chander returned after defeating Rawan and the people of his kingdom celebrated diwali with lighting lamps.the second function was when founder of jain faith (mahabir) got enlightened. They celebrated diwali by lighting lamps. Third incidence took place when Samrat Ashok became budhist. At that time the budhists celebrated it by lighting the lamps. the fourth incidence is when guru Hargobin returned to Amritsar after being released from Gwalior jail. The festival is diwali and all four faiths celebrated it by lighting lamps on that day to celebrate it. Let us see that ram chander celebrated diwali with lighting lamps. That means diwali celebration was there before him as well. So it is an ancient function of Indians. Now a new question arises for some people, because first evidence of celebrating diwali comes to light when Ram chander celebrated it. Because of this many people call it a Hindu festival. It is not so. It is Indian festival before even hindus came into being. Those who say or fear that it is a Hindu festival are completely ignorant of the fact.
