Are we are born with fixed number of breaths?

Other religious believes are that we are born with fixed number of breaths and those are completed physical death happens.
Is Sikh philosophy any different?

The Kirtan Sohila Bani from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is the bani that is recited before sleeping. We die a temporary death every night and are with God in our deep sleep. For any ceremony, when the invitation cards are sent, the date is mentioned. The Kirtan Sohila Bani mentions that that invitation is sent to every house(which means the death to physical body is going to happen for every body) and it is a reminder to do the needful(what will be helpful to that person) before it's time to leave. It is mentioned there-
Sambat saahaa likhia mil kar paavo tel
The Samvat year(bikrami samvat) and the breaths are written on that invitation. I don't think it is written for that night only because in that case the year would need not be mentioned. So it is both the samvat year and number of breaths written for each person.

Lekha hoye ta likhiye, lekhe hoi vinaas

We are at mercy of past karma but at same time have free will, so that we can co-create our destiny every moment.

There is nothing like fixed number of breaths etc.

Sikhism makes a person self dependent and detached from worldly ties , the word in guru granth sahibji says that detached one must live and be determined to live detached forever and remain attached only to the word and through word GOD is attained great is the linage of the gurus who have mastered such a life through GURUNANAK DEVJI - tinko Kya upadesiye Jin gur Nanak deo .

Fifth Mahalla,

Hymn: There is one God. He is realized by guru’s grace

I pay regards to the primal guru. I pay regards to the guru from all ages. I pay regards to the true guru. I pay regards to my guru. ||1||



Ashtapadee: (eight stanza)

Recite the name of God. You shall find peace.

It will eliminate argument and sufferings from the body.

Recite the name of the caretaker of the universe.

His Name is recited by many in many ways.

The Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees were written by reciting One word (God) the name of God. If one enshrines His name in the mind even a moment !

His glory cannot be described

Those who recite God. They have longing for envisioning Him

O Nanak: save me along with them! ||1||

The sermon to happiness is the sacred name of God.

It gives peace to the minds of God’s devotees. ||Pause||

Reciting God; one shall not enter the womb.

Reciting God; the fear of the messenger of death goes away.

Reciting God; the death is eliminated.

Reciting God; the enemies go away.

Reciting God; no obstacle comes in the way.

Reciting God; one stays awake all the time.

Reciting God; desire does not bother.

Reciting God; the sufferings do not bother.

Recite God in the company of devotees!

All treasures, O Nanak, are in the love of God. ||2||

Reciting God; attains divine wisdom, mystic power, and all treasures. Reciting God; attains knowledge concentration and essence of wisdom.

Reciting God; attains meditation penance and worship.

Reciting God; duality is eliminated.

Reciting God; is like bathing at sacred shrines.

Reciting God; one is respected in His court.

Reciting God whatever happens is good.

Reciting God; the life is fruitful. Those whom God inspires, recite His name

Says Nanak; he will touch their feet. ||3||

Reciting God is the highest of all.

Reciting God; everyone attains salvation.

Reciting God; greed is eliminated.

Reciting God; everything is understood.

Reciting God; fear of death is eliminated.

Reciting God; desires are fulfilled.

Reciting God; the filth of the mind is removed.

Enshrine the sacred name in the mind!

God’s name dwells on the tongue of devotees.

Nanak is servant of the servants. ||4||

Those who recite God are wealthy.

Those who recite God are honourable.

Those who recite God are approved.

Those who recite God are distinguished persons.

Those who recite God do not look to anyone.

Those who recite God are rulers of all.

Those who recite God live in peace.

Those who recite God are immortal.

They recite God, unto whom He bestows His kindness.

Nanak begs for the dust of their feet. ||5||

Those who recite God do good deeds.

Those who recite God are admired forever

Those who recite God are happy.

Those who recite God enjoy peace.

Those who recite God conquer their souls.

Those who recite God their ways are sacred

Those who recite God experience all sorts of joy.

Those who recite God live close to God.

By the grace of saints, one remains awake all the time.

O Nanak those who recite God are due to perfect luck. ||6||

Reciting God the deeds are fulfilled.

Reciting God one never has to repent.

Reciting God one speaks about the virtues of God.

Reciting God one attains contentment.

Reciting God one becomes stable.

Reciting God the mind blossoms.

Reciting God the infinite divine music starts to play.

Reciting God, there is no end to happiness.

They worship God, to whom God is kind.

Nanak seeks the sanctuary of those humble beings. ||7||

Reciting God makes God’s devotee.

Reciting God the Vedas (scriptures) are composed.

Reciting God, people become mystic celibate and bestowals.

Reciting God the lowly become known in all four corners.

Reciting God; God created the creation.

Reciting God the Creator does everything.

Reciting God; God created the universe.

God is realized through recitation.

By His grace whoever He bestows realization!

O Nanak those guru-willed realize God by reciting Him. ||8||1||
I read it, translated it and here it is, but i did not understand what you meant by read till you understand

It is very comforting for us as humans to explain away unknowns or what we cannot fathom and classify such concepts as pre-ordained. Whereas SGGS ji warns us to not pursue fruitlessly the desire to know it all, there are many who guide us this way. Whether these are Babas, Katha wachiks or Kirtan jathas.

We need to recognize that whereas we have but no choice other than to live in consonance with creation, we may get comfort by claiming to know what and when for our life cycle prior to birth, during living and being alive and post death. There would be many examples of teachings in SGGS where by corollary we are taught but we fall for the literal and miss the essence of what is being taught. For me it is getting caught in the weeds rather than recognizing un-fathombale attributes of our or other aspects of nature that we are part of.

Try not to convert teachings into numbers of one type or other. It does not matter whether such numbers relate to so called number of re-incarnations, breaths or heartbeats. You are likely to fail the teachings in SGGS if you do so.

Raag Soohee, Fifth Mahalla, Fifth House, Partaal:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

There is one God. He is realized by guru’s grace.

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੀਆ ਮੋਹਨ ਲਾਲਨਾ ॥

O beloved, love your guru.

ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਏਕੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋ ਲੇਖੈ ਸੰਤ ਲਾਗੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਛਾਡੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਕੀ ਕੁਰੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Recite God in your mind. Nothing else is of any use. Enshrine the saint in your mind and give up falsehood and duality.

||1||Pause||

ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਹਰੀਆ ਸਰਗੁਨ ਧਰੀਆ ਅਨਿਕ ਕੋਠਰੀਆ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿਨ ਕਰੀਆ

The Lord is absolute. The world is manifest. There are many chambers and He hums in them many ways.

ਵਿਚਿ ਮਨ ਕੋਟਵਰੀਆ ॥

There are many chambers in the mind.

ਨਿਜ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਪਿਰੀਆ ॥

The beloved Lord lives there.

ਤਹਾ ਆਨਦ ਕਰੀਆ ॥

He enjoys there.

ਨਹ ਮਰੀਆ ਨਹ ਜਰੀਆ ॥੧॥

He does not die or burn. ||1||

ਕਿਰਤਨਿ ਜੁਰੀਆ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਫਿਰੀਆ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਹਿਰੀਆ ॥

He engages in His activities in various ways. He is realized by giving up duality.

ਬਿਖਨਾ ਘਿਰੀਆ ॥

The world is engaged in bad deeds.

ਅਬ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੀਆ ॥

Now I joined the company of devotees.

ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਖਰੀਆ ॥

I stand at God’s door.

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਕਰੀਆ ॥

I envision Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਰੀਆ ॥

O Nanak; meeting the guru;

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਫਿਰੀਆ ॥੨॥੧॥੪੪॥

He shall not wander anymore. ||2||1||44||

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ Bilaaval, Fourth Mahalla:

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਕੋ ਜਾਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਜਪੈਨੀ ॥

Anyone, from any caste - Kashaatriya, Brahman, Soodra or Vaishya - can say the mantra to recite God.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਸਭ ਰੈਨੀ ॥੧॥

Worship the guru as the supreme Lord; serve Him day and night. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨੈਨੀ ॥

O humble servants of the Lord, see the true guru with your eyes.

ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬੈਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Obtain reward of your choice by saying God through guru’s teaching. ||1||Pause||
