138 out of 139 students of Government school
fail in Class X exam

Munish Sekhri - The Daily Pioneer - Batala - June 26, 2010

In what comes as a shocking reflection on the state of affairs in Punjab’s school education, 138 out of 139 students of Class X of the Government Senior Secondary School, Harpura Dhandoi of the district, failed in the annual examination conducted by Punjab School Education Board (PSEB).

According to information available, a total of 139 students had appeared in Class X examination, but 138 of them were declared failed while the remining student was able to pass but failed in Mathematics.

Similar was the fate of around 175 students who appeared in the Class XII examination held by the PSEB as only 12 of them were able to clear the tests successfully.

The result of Class VIII was no different than the earlier ones where three students out of a total of 100 students appeared in examinations cleared the examination.

When contacted, Gurmeet Singh, District Education Officer (DEO) said that he would personally look into the matter and action would be taken against the erring teachers if found guilty of not teaching properly.

Though the Centre and State Governments are spending crores of rupees on providing better education under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Government schools on the pattern of private schools, their efforts were proving futile in the wake of such poor results shown by some of the schools which raise several questions.
