Benu, in Egyptian mythology, is the bird representing the soul—the ba—of Ra, who precedes him in the solar boat. The Book of the Dead says: "I am the Benu Bird, the Soul/Heart of Ra, the Guide of the Gods to the Duat." It is associated with the flooding of the Nile, resurrection, and the Sun. He is also associated with the planet Venus, the one that carries the Benu bird. Due to his connection to creation and renewal, he is linked to the calendar The temple of Benu was renowned for the time-counting systems it housed.
