I hope this is not true. Maybe a forum member will have a report about this.

Elephants behaving badly banned from India Republic Day parade

Bejewelled elephants that have delighted crowds at every Indian Republic Day since 1950 have been banned from this year's parade due to their "berserk" behaviour, according to officials. The elephants had been a highlight of the procession through the centre of the capital marking India's birth as a republic, three years after independence from British rule. [Agencies]

May Ram inspire in our hearts the feeling of integrity, unity, peace, compassion, tolerance and give us the strength to maintain unity in diversity and bless us with the feeling of pride when we see our tri colour flag our "tiranga" being hoisted any where or every where in this world.May we live always like this and the thing which makes us Indians which of course is not the similarity of coulour, caste and religion but our belief in the saying "satyamev jayte" "victory belongs to the truth" always inspire us.............

Sinister ji

Forum member Gyani Jarnail Singh ji has a great story about a camel. I love them. But it appears that the elephants were banned this year for being temperamental. The pic in the thread is from last year. It was too early when I posted to have current pics from today's parade. The last set are from the Jan 25 rehearsal. Which are glorious pics anyway. They work for me. Maybe later today members will post more pics.

Congratulations on your 60th to the Republic of India.

Well First News of the day here in the US about the parade --

Elephants missed at Republic Day parade (Snippets, Lead)

Elephants missed at Republic Day parade (Snippets, Lead)

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS) The huge disappointment of this year’s Republic Day was the absence of the elephants that normally carried children recognised for exemplary bravery. When the boys and girls came aboard open military vehicles, they failed to generate the usual attention and cheer. In contrast to earlier Republic Day parades, the ride did little to lift the spirits of the 20 young ones. Eventually the shy youngsters sat waving to rather placid crowds.

Among the colourful floats the one that stood out was when a dummy train ‘chugged’ onto the parade path - courtesy the Indian Railways - depicting the Jammu-Baramullah rail service. An excited Railway Minister Lalu Prasad pointed it out to others in the audience.

Maharashtra’s musical float, depicting shepherds in their traditional attire and a man dressed as a sheep dancing in front, amused spectators as well as President Pratibha Patil, who hails from the state.

As in the past, the Border Security Force’s (BSF) colourful camel contingent was a major hit with the crowds, including diplomats as well as the chief guest, Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarvayev.

What really got the audience off their seats - literally - was the act of daredevilry by the army’s motorcycle riders. They presented various formations including a human pyramid on nine bikes holding up the national flag.

Sat shri akal,
Anyone here is aware of the fact that it was the Sikh empires army which first paraded on the rajpath the place where the Indian forces do it. The Sikhs had French mechanized infantry and other Guns. wow that was the time for the Sikhs.;)
