Crime against women on rise in Punjab

CHANDIGARHunjab has witnessed a sharp rise in crime cases including molestation, family disputes and police atrocities particularly the crime against women.
The figures available with the Punjab Humar Right Commission (PHRC) are alarming as far as registration of flase cases by police is concerned.
The PHRC till August 2009, the PHRC has received 9565 complaints out of which about 5000 complaints are related to police only. During first eight months the commission has received 100 complaints of illegal police detention against 52 cases received during the year 2008. This year the cases of illegal detention by police is are the highest in last 12 years.
The commission has received 21 cases of police highhandedness in the first eight months against 17 cases in the year 2008. The commission as received 676 complaints of registration of false cases by police and 2352 complaints of police failure to take action against accused were received this year.
The figures of atrocities against women has made a record rise. This year 34 cases of murder and molestation were received from state while last year only 7 such cases were rerported. In 2007 the number of cases was only 11.The commission has received 34 cases of rape till August 2009 against 45 cases reported in full year of 2008. The commission has also received 30 cases of dowry deaths which is highest in the last three years. Last year commissiomn had received 23 cases and in 2006 and 2007, the number of cases was 17 and 19 respectively.
