In a statement party’s political secretary Kanwar Pal Singh appreciated the role and efforts of Sukh Dhaliwal, MP and Andrew Kania, MP in presenting the motion asking the Canadian government to declare the massacre of Sikhs in 1984 as 'genocide'.
He described the tabling of a motion by an Indo-Canadian MP’s as a landmark step that has exposed Indian politicians for committing crime against humanity. Taking a dig at Indian mainstream media for dubbing the massacre of Sikhs in Nov 1984 as “riots”, he said it was organized killing supported by state machinery resulting in deaths of thousands of innocents. “The move to recognize it as genocide as per UN convention on the prevention and punishment of the kind of genocide would have far reaching effects”.
Sikhs in Punjab, India and the Diaspora have cried ho{censored}, year after year, for the last 26 years, that such gross injustice should shame the rulers of the country, but to no avail, he said.
In an appeal to United Nations, the leaders of Sikh body including its head H S Dhami urged the international community to ensure that the perpetrators of the genocidal attacks on Sikhs are punished.
“All attempts to get justice within the legal framework of the Indian system for the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh carnage that took place quarter a century ago have failed”. Seeking world powers intervention to get justice, Kanwarpal Singh said US, UK, France, China and Canada can influence the course of history of the beleaguered Sikhs.
Notably, Dal Khalsa has submitted a memorandum to the Secretary General United Nations Hon’ble Mr. Ban-ki-Moon through Ms Shalini Dewan, Director, United Nations Information Centre, New Delhi on 11 November last year to seek UN intervention.
