THE 300TH CORONATION ANNIVERSARY OF SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB
AND THE 342ND BIRTHDAY OF SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI
DECEMBER 25, 2008 7AM - 3PM Pacific Standard Time ( 10 Pm To 4:30 Am DEC 26th IST) 10Am To 6 Pm EST
AT Mt. SAC COLLEGE, WALNUT, CA 91789
LARGEST SIKH CONGREGATION IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Preparations are already underway at the MT. SAC College, 1100 N. Grand Avenue, Walnut, CA 91789 for the largest and the most sought-after religious congregation of the Sikhs in Southern California. Over 15,000 devotees from all over California and the neighboring States are expected this year to attend the 300th coronation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the 342nd birthday of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji.
As always, the guitar playing Nihang Baba Harnar Singh of the Venice Beach fame
will sing Guru’s songs, as he roller blades to greet the Sangat and
give out Gurpurab candy to the children.
TWENTY THIRD YEAR OF CELEBRATION
DARBAR-E-KHALSA is celebrated with such an unparalleled mix of reverence, pomp, grandeur and feasting that the number of attendees has grown from about 700 in 1986 to over 13,000 in the past 22 years. The function is organized annually by
International Institute of Gurmat Studies, Inc., a California based Sikh organization
that is known for pioneering the Sikh youth camping movement internationally
for the past 36 years.
DIVINE KIRTAN AND MEDITATION
The day- long program will begin at 7am with the melodious singing of Asa Di Vaar by the world-famous Ragi Jatha of Bhai Davender Singh Gulbag Singh. This will befollowed by heart-rending Shabad Kirtans by 25 renowned Ragi Jathas including Sikh Dharma, IIGS and talented children’s groups. Additionally, there will be the awards ceremony, some short speeches and poems on the life and teachings of the ten great Gurus. The program will conclude with the joint performance
by 5-Hazuri Ragi Jathas of Southland Gurdwaras.
THE AWARDS CEREMONY
An important feature of the function includes recognition of individuals who have either devoted their lives to the service of the Sikh community or have distinguished them-selves in any field, promoting the Khalsa image.
FUN, FOOD AND KHALSA BAZAAR
Sumptuous hot breakfast is served to the arriving Sangat at the entrance by a dedicated team of volunteers. Delicious Guru Ka Langar (hot lunch on the Guru’s House!) is served on the open lawns in the traditional Pangat-style. Chairs and tables are for the use of senior citizens. The open- air Bazaar, beautifully set up by various vendors selling religious artifacts, books, jewelry, audio-videos, paintings, pictures, clothes- just about everything, is always a big attraction.
CEREMONIAL SEND OFF TO SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB
The function inside the exquisitely decorated and delightfully lit hall will come to a close around 3 pm, with the thanks-giving Ardaas by Giani Gurmukh Singh ji. As the Sawaari of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji starts to leave the Hall for the Khalsa Parade, the chanting of Wahe-Guru …Wahe-Guru …Wahe-Guru fills the air. The Sadh Sangat bows down to the ground in complete reverence as Sri Guru ji’s Palki passes by.
THE KHALSA PARADE
An impressive, short distance Khalsa Parade begins with the beat of the Nagaara (drum). Young Sikh children carrying Khalsa and American flags joyfully line up to lead the Parade to the waiting helicopter. Thousands of devotees in their multi-colored turbans and dupattas walk along delightfully beside Sri Guru Granth Sahib’s Golden Paalki. While the Panj Piaraas in their traditional Khalsa attire escort the Palki, the Palki is shoulder-carried in rotation by six Singhs, while
the seventh Singh carries the umbrella.
The helipad area reverberates with the thunderous Jaikaraas of Bole So Nihaal, Sat Sri Akaal, as Sri Guru Granth Sahib’s helicopter slowly lifts up and, colorful balloons fill up the sky. With this concludes, the US West- Coast Sikh- Diaspora’s memorable
annual celebration of the Dasmesh Gurpurab, organized by
International Institute of Gurmat Studies, Inc. (IIGS).
