SURREY - A Surrey woman will serve a nine-year prison term for trying to smuggle $2 million worth of heroin hidden in framed wedding photos from India.

Kamaljit Kaur Dyal, 37, was arrested on Nov. 15, 2004 at Vancouver International Airport while returning from India with 18 wood-framed wedding photos.

Contraband-detection equipment revealed that heroin was stashed between the large photos and the frames, which were then sealed. More of the drug was found in false compartments in two suitcases. A total of 11.5 kilograms of heroin, with an estimated street value of $2.3 million, was seized.
At the time, officials said they believed that organized crime was behind the smuggling attempt.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Barry Davies recently sentenced Dyal to nine years in prison for importing heroin and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
