Three Sikh students were expelled from school for refusing to remove their turbans, the first time Sikhs were forced out under a new law banning conspicuous religious signs and apparel in the classroom, their lawyer said.

Officials of the Louise Michel high school in Bobigny, northeast of Paris, on Friday decided to expel the three teenagers at disciplinary hearings ordered by a court, said lawyer Felix de Belloy.

French govt's decision about banning religious symbols is something against freedom of religion. Or perhaps they just want to make everyone there christian in due time by forcing such kind of flawful. So insecure guys!!! Have they heard of a bird named 'human rights' and 'freedom of expression'?

I think the reason why this may happen is because of the new law about not wearing your religious symbols and any other religious icons. Do you think it's right that people should hide their religious identity? Perhaps we should view the possible pros and cons.

Pros: Everyone is treated on an equal level. People aren't subjected to religious intolerance.

Cons: You cannot practice your religion out in public in that area. (i.e. Muslim prayer)

Can anyone come up with any more. I know there must be more for each pro and con.

Equality doesnt seem to be in French govt's agenda at all. What if an intolerant in sikh disguise is president/prime minister there in France, and then pass a law for having everyone turbanned? All will be equal then, no discrimination, Is it?

They wouldn't make everyone wear a turban b/c that would be violating their own law. Their law is to not wear anything that shows affiliation to any faith. You're acting as if this has only happend to Sikhs. You're mistaken. It's happening to people of many religious affiliations. There was a Muslim girl who was expelled as well. As for Christians and people of other religions, it's easy to hide your faith, just hide your cross or whatever symbol under your shirt if you feel the need to wear it. People of various faiths do that too.

I just gave an example. I am aware of this no-freedom-of-religion in their law, which affects many affiliations.

I do not think turban is a religious symbol at all. Turban is basically a socio-cultural head gear of the Indian subcontinent in particular. Long hair on the other hand can definitely be regarded as religious symbol in the modern world! And turban is in fact hiding them!!

What next the French Govt. Plan hide every body's name because they generaly reflect one's religiuous faith and give code numbers to all students to be identified. Either French Govt. Has been hijacked by some Alien Species who have altered their minds or they have gone crazy or they are thankless creatures even to those who laid their lives in the Name of Guru Gobind Singh to fight for the rights and freedom of those who have been victim of operession 140,000 sikhs lost their lives in two world wars and one of the main achievement of that was Freedom for French People and Govt.
That war was aught with full Sikh Regalia fully adorned by the Sikh Soldiers and their ancestors today are being denied the freedom of their rights what French who they are? If Sikhs can Sacrifice for protecting others rights and freedom they will not stop doing so for their own. All People of belief, Eauropean Govt. UN and the nations with some sense should put their pressure on the French Govt to have good sense and change these laws.
If necessary why not stop trading with French and bycott French Govt.

It seems that the French forget that the world is diverse and Sikhism is not only a religion but a culture, Next they'll call for removal of religious symbols from buildings.

Sat Nam, everyone, and you are right- there has been talk there of removing all religious symbols from the schools and public buildings, especially the government buildings. What would be interesting is to see if they removed the gargoyles, symbols of an ancient cult, too. Yes, they are attempting to abolish all public showing of any religious affiliation at all by anyone, and if you examine the Lenin/Marx writings you will see why. Many political leaders of many nations are actually terrified of anyone having more allegience towards God, Guru, Yaweh, Allah, Shiva, Jesus, or Great Spirit-however you wish to relate to The Divine One-than to some political leader or political party.
Wahe Guru,
