Sikhs would have gotten autonomous state if it wasnt for Master Tara Singhs love for Congress leader Nehru. Master Tara Singh alongwith three other leaders went to London to discuss about it and the Crown was willing to give a large land to Sikhs but Master came back with 'arms in arms' with Nehru. He also failed to see through the advises of opportunist Sikhs who placed personal gains over larger community gains. Akalis were not fanatics or extremists, as Congress lovers would like to paint them, but many were and are opportuntists but certainly better than our own 'bhibhishans' !The treatment given to Sikhs is legendary and it is well recorded how a brave and respectful community who had earlier served others selflessly was humiliated and reduced to nothing by the Govt of India. And dont forget it was under Nehrus patronage that the first mosque in independant India was demolished in Gujrat to pave way for mandir under the pretext that 'there were no longer any muslim left in the area to look after it it after creation of Pakistan'.It obviously baffles a lot of people the rising strides of Sikhs without losing the dynamic religious traditions in this age...again.
