How Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala was killed, one question many answers ?

AMRITSAR: Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala's, the militant Sikh leader of 19th centuary who died during operation Blue Star was according to his post mortem report was shot dead from close range. However former GOC, Panther Division, Major-Gen JS Jamwal (retd) has claimed Sant Bhindrawla was killed under debries while trying tro escape the heavy firing.

Claim on Bhindrawala's killing by army contested by his aide -From the Newsline Liberary

Jamwal told media in Amritsar recently that the Army had the intelligence Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was trying to ‘escape’ heavy firing from his fortified position at Akal Takht on the last day of Operation Bluestar but died under falling debris due to artillery shelling.

Then Commander of the 15 Infantry Division, Major- Gen Jamwal, said according to his information, the Army was keen on capturing the militants alive but stiff resistance from them, who had fortified themselves around the Golden Temple complex, forced Army to immobilise them by using heavy weapons.

General Jamwal reiterated he was the Garrison Commander at Amritsar at that time but his views were not sought and added there were better alternatives, including cutting of water, power and food supply to flush out Bhindranwale and his followers, who had taken refuge in the building of Akal Takht. Such a step could have saved many lives besides protecting the sanctity of the holy shrine. He said Army commanders, supervising the operation, got panicky due to heavy casualties initially of commandos in the temple complex.

He said tactical planning was fraught with dangerous repercussions, which were aimed at dividing the countrymen. The nation paid heavy price and has yet to recover from the trauma.

According to sources, initially the then government at the Centre had assigned the task to the BSF and other paramilitary forces but their refusal to undertake the operation forced then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to order the Army to clear the shrine of anti-national elements.

He said Gandhi had summoned then Commander of Western Army Command, Lt Gen Sundarji, bypassing then Army chief, late Gen AS Vaidya. He said Operation Bluestar was botched up and lacked proper planning that had resulted collateral damage and huge loss of life. He said the local Army Garrison was not involved in planning and execution of the operation and was directed to move to the international border with Pakistan to restrain any misadventure the neighbour may undertake to take advantage of the country’s internal security problem.

Recalling the traumatic days during the operation, some of the eyewitnesses to the operation said after the initial attack by the Army’s elite para-commanders who became lame duck targets of militants resulting in heavy casualties, the senior Army commanders overseeing the operations were in for shock and sought the local Army commander’s support to break the impasse.

Major-Gen Jamwal said a senior Army officer and chief of the staff operations had requested him to spare some of his reserve forces for launching a final attack on the Golden Temple to secure its release from the militants. He said the last two days turned out to be more crucial and the reserve platoons managed to break the stranglehold and free the shrine for its captors.

Kanwardeep Singh ji

Thanks for giving us a documented account. It is important when discussing the controversy -- was Bhindranwale a "saint" or not -- to have some kind of bedrock of evidence before going off in a tangent in one direction or another. I appreciate this article.

sisters & brothers..Saint or terrorist: Bhindranwale Open the debate.
1:Back in the early 1980's I was a impressionable 20 years old living in the UK.The pictures we saw of Bhindranwale left a lasting impression on the minds of my friends/fellow Sikhs/..and me. Even today YouTube is bursting with Bhindranwale footage and even today it brings me out in a cold sweat...he was blessed with a formidable persona.
2:In the UK we were given reports that Sikhs were being beaten/killed/abused by Hindus and the police, the Punjab was being "raped" by the Congress party, the Sikh identity and way of life was being erased from India by the Hindus...etc etc you get the idea.
3:Along comes Bhindranwale, created by the Hindu Congress party to subdue the militant Sikhs of the Akali political movement....it backfired BIG time...
4:What did Bhindranwale actually stand for ?
5:Self atonamy for Punjab ,a land locked area boardering pakistan and china (these 2 also supplied weapons to the the Sikhs ,not because they loved them..only to cause insecurity in India)
6:I believe Sikhs and the Khalsa arose from the soil of India,to defend the weak of India,Sikhs ARE India.
7:Why do Sikhs need separate homelands...India is OURS..
8:Our 10th GuruJi Gobind Singh lit a fire in our souls...no Hindu/Muslim can ever extinguish that fire.
Sorry if I have jumped around on the subject a bit...

1. For more ideas, talk to Fauja Singh's wife. he died on April 13th , 1978 in amritsar.
2. Why did not guru Gobind Singh stay in Harmandir saahib when moughals were ruling in Delhi.
3. yes it is good to ignore mistakes of our people but do not glorify to the point of becoming a lier.
4. Truth is GOD ????? Is it? Really?

Now, after pointing finger, what should we do. Where from we should get a good leader. We have to get good leaders. promote institutons where such possibilty of identifying a leader is greater.
We should focus on this task . Put our energies on this primary task.
On a different note, we should also bring back prosperity to Punjab so that people get time to think about such matters.right now everybody is busy making money by hook or crook ( Politics of Baadal).
We need more industry in Punjab.
Where is Raunak Singh, Ranbaxy groups. They should start their venture. govt. help WILL come. They have the money to fight badals. Let them start small so that they need less money to satisfy politicians. After all we have to live in present world. They can always setup CBI for fighting corruption. Why they get discouraged after one/ two attempts?
If they remain silent, it is a big sin on their part.
