Hi Sikh Philosophy,
I am studying religion in school and researching the question: 'What viewpoints exist within Sikhi regarding the inclusion of chairs and tables in ‘Langar’ halls?'

Here in South Australia, there is one Gurdwara that has chairs and tables in its Langar halls. Do you think this would increase attendance at Gurdwara or help Sikhism be accessible to more people in the modern world?

Thank you!

firstly there is no rule not to sit on chairs and eat langar. all there is that sggs should be sitting higher than you. next, lot of people have trouble sitting on the floor. so they sit on the chairs and use tables. when it was started by thrd guru, there no tables and chairs in abundance. so it was best to sit on the ground and eat. with the change of times there is no harm sitting on chairs and eat langar. sitting togather at the same platform was designed to express equality.; if everyone sits on the chairs and eats. then it also express equality. Sikh religion scripture (sggs). does not deal with social issues. it only deals with you, your mind, and the guru who teaches you the spirituality. other things such as , do not lie, do not cheat, earn your living, help the poor is human code of conduct which we are born with and the religion takes over and guides the congregation to regain the conduct. the religion does not go beyond that.

It does express equality and as long as one bears this in mind, sitting on a chair makes no difference. In the end, being a billionaire or only having a few pennies, being brown or white, doesn’t elevate or lower you against another human being. Humans are Equal, that’s the gyan.
