Nice post.

With regards to hindu women sacrificing themselves on funeral pyres, one could say that it was ignorance. The woman could have been taught how to fight etc or perhaps could have fled.

 I would guess that in many cases, it was the darkness of cultural practices that led them to commit suicide.
