One of the biggest contributors to this massive MISINTERPRETATION is the Bhagwa FARIDKOTEE TEEKA...prepared by the NIRMALA SADHUS....Modern day "Sadhus" who depend on this source to "interpret" Guru nanak ji are on the wrong foot from the word GO..that is EK Oangkaar becasue they assume this is the .."same old thingy called OM...for ages by their co-sadhu minded vedantis...a huge mistake..becasue the GYAAN of Guru nanak Ji and SGGS is BRAND NEW...EONS away from the Vedas or the Puranas etc..What could be more clearer than this..ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੇਣਾ ਲੈ ਲ਼ੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਿਮ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥It is the teachings of Vedas, which has created the concepts of sin and virtue, hell and heaven, and karma and transmigration. One reaps the reward in the next life for the deeds performed in this life⎯goes to hell or heaven according to the deeds.
