I understand the importance of Nitnem in general context of a religious practice, but I often hear during Katha, that you reading something alone isnt enough with out application and understanding. So that always makes me wonder is Nitnem even necessary?

If we do it only because were told to, is that serving the purpose they were complied for? In that sense, people who choose not read Chaupai, Swaya, and Jaap sahib are they actually missing something?

Personally, Nitnem for me is all about finding a path to Sat Guruji and if a particular Shabad does that for you then you should continue to use it as tool. Its a daily practice to keep you connected or at least taking the time out and commit to cultivating this path.

Ive never really understood the debate with this, if the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji speaks on empty rituals then isnt requiring a rigid nitnem creating the same thing?
