Re: ‘Patit’, and Indelibly Inked
Action against illegal voters won't serve purpose
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday questioned the logic of ordering inquiry and action into the illegal voting during the recently held elections to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
“Any inquiry would hardly serve any purpose and it would just be an eyewash as even non-Sikhs were allowed to vote in Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s village itself, while genuine Sikhs were prevented from voting and the elections officials facilitated it all,” Amarinder said in a press statement.
Referring to the Gurdwara Election Commission (GEC) asking the Commissioner of Gurdwara Elections, Punjab, to take immediate action against those having violated the election guidelines, he said any action now is like locking the stable doors after the horse has bolted. “What action does the GEC expect the commissioner of Gurdwara Elections to take when he happens to be an employee of the state government headed by Badal? It would be naive to expect him to take any action against his boss. Moreover, what purpose will it serve as the election process has already been completed and the results declared,” Amarinder said.
The former Chief Minister stated that the way the SGPC elections were conducted only eroded the credibility of the GEC. “The genuine Gursikh voters were not allowed to exercise the franchise as Badal feared they might vote against his party. It was extensively reported in the media which was enough proof for the GEC to act instead of waiting for an inquiry which may never come,” he added.
