Premier Mom takes over
The Toronto Star - March 01, 2011
Margaret Thatcher, the redoubtable one-time leader of Britain’s Conservatives, a woman who with the raise of an eyebrow could put fear into a man’s heart, once claimed with a whiff of sarcasm: “In politics if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman.”
Getting a woman to roll up her sleeves and get things done was the idea behind the B.C. Liberal Party’s choice over the weekend of Christy Clark as its leader and the province’s premier-designate. Her mother, Mavis, once said Clark was a “tough cookie.” She will have to be tough as she balances the roughness of B.C. politics with mothering her school-age son, Hamish. Premier Mom, as she has been quickly dubbed, has a long to-do list: winning a seat in the legislature, stickhandling tough issues like the harmonized sales tax, and preparing for an election.
As Lady Thatcher once noted about a woman who leads a political party: “It may be the {censored} that crows, but it is the hen that lays the eggs.” Now that Clark has won her party’s crown, voters will be looking for those results.
