AMRITSAR: To regulate the flow of vehicular traffic inside the old walled city especially around Golden Temple, the District Administration has decided to declare Chowk Phuwara main road approaching to Golden Temple road as ‘No vehicular Zone’ and its usage would be restricted to pedestrians only.
Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar Kahan Singh Pannu said that thousands of people visit Golden Temple daily to pay obeisance and similar numbers of tourists visit the historic Jallianwala Bagh to pay their homage to the martyrs. Due to the huge pressure of vehicular traffic on this route, it has become absolutely necessary to curtail bottleneck traffic on this route. For this purpose, it has been decided that the route would be limited to pedestrian usage and all the vehicles would be parked in the Saragarhi and Kesri Bagh parkings which have the capacity of housing thousands of cars.
Added to this, it has also been decided to declare Hall Bazar to Town Hall and Town Hall to Katra Jaimal Singh, Katra Sher Singh till Sikandari Gate to be no parking zones, said Pannu. He opined that this initiative would go a long way in easing the vehicular pressure enroute to Golden Temple and would also check the rise in pollution level in the said area.
Deputy Commissioner informed that before implementing the said programme, a public notice has been issued in the interest of the people, seeking their suggestions and objections to this plan. He informed that this plan would be implemented from March 15, 2010 and any suggestions and objections to it can be sent to the office of Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar by March 8, 2010.
