Congressional Internships: Application Deadline March 27th
SALDEF has partnered with congressional offices to offer Sikh American students internships on Capitol Hill. Apply now to our Congressional Internship Program to spend your summer in Washington, DC interning with a member of Congress. SALDEF Participates in White House Meeting About Anti-Bullying Efforts
On January 26, the White House in coordination with the Department of Justice and Department of Education held a meeting with Asian American and Pacific Islander groups to discuss federal anti-bullying laws and initiatives. The meeting represents increased collaboration between the organizations and the federal agencies to address one the communities most serious issues. This handy resource can be used in your local community to educate and increase awareness of Sikhs and Sikhi. The calendars feature full-color images of Sikh Americans, along with examples of core Sikh values and facts about Sikhs in the United States. On the back, the cards have a 2011 calendar in an easy-to-use design. Sikhs across the nation have distributed them at their workplace, schools, convenience stores, gas stations, taxi cabs, senior citizens centers, and public libraries. SALDEF Joins Rights Working Group in Protest of Racist Hearings
Chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security Representative Peter King (R-NY) is planning to hold a series of Congressional Hearings on the "radicalization" of Muslim Americans. SALDEF feels these hearings are discriminatory and will increase the likelihood of hate crimes and racial profiling across the country. The hearings pose a risk to all communities that have been targeted based on their race and religious beliefs. The sign-on letter raises concerns about these hearings and their impact on religious profiling. The effort is being led by our partners at the Rights Working Group.
All Sikhs Encouraged to Celebrate March 14th as Sikh Environment Day
Sikhs across the world will celebrate March 14th, Gurgaddi Diwas of Guru Har Rai Ji as Sikh Environment Day. During this week, 101 Gurdwaras in the Sikh Diaspora and 101 Gurdwaras in Punjab will celebrate the day by holding divaans and events on the environment. Please visit www.ecosikh.org to learn more.
National Geographic Apologizes to Sikh Americans
Earlier this month, SALDEF received an apology from National Geographic for their misrepresentation of Sikh Americans in a documentary titled “Inside Al-Qaeda.” Although the company has agreed to remove the offensive segment from the documentary, SALDEF is exploring the opportunity to create positive programming on Sikh Americans.
