But we have a golden opportunity at this very point in time to educate the ones who can be educated. Until maybe 10 years ago in the US, Sikhs lived in enclaves and no one really knew Sikhs -- except of course in places like Fresno California. Now we are all over the place, coming out of the supermarket in a suburban town and waiting at Kinko's for our big duplicating order to be completed and paid for. It is our duty to educate. The burden falls more on men than on women -- wear turbans and karas and be ready to talk about it. This "talking" about Sikhism goes against the grain -- no one is supposed to preach or brag. It is for the most part Sikhs who are reading about Sikh Research Institute and Sikh Coalition. The rest don't even know about them. Too much humility ad self-effacement and "fitting-in" is getting in the way of educating the world. Time to stop this. Once the average person hears a short explanation, they are hooked for life.
