JALANDHAR: Punjabi NRI Sammelan held here on Tuesday saw a fewer footfall but that did not deter the state government from announcing strategic measures to address the issues of deserted brides besides Punjabi men languishing in foreign jails due to human trafficking by illegal travel agents.
Though these points had been confronting the state for over a decade and repeated demands had been raised by concerned quarters to take effective steps, the announcements followed the stand taken by Punjabi politicians from abroad during the past few days.
During a presentation for attracting investments, Badal announced constitution of a high-powered cell under inspector general of police Gurpreet Deo to provide aid to the brides deserted by their NRI husbands after marriage. The cell would also provide aid to the youths trapped in other countries, sent fraudulently by travel agents.
This panel would not only provide legal aid to the affected women but also pursue criminal cases in the country, where the bridegroom had fled, and work for their extradition. Besides, the committee would also provide help to the youths trapped in other countries without any valid documents. The law enacted by the state government to check agents was awaiting President's nod. Help would also be arranged for the 67 Punjabi youths who were facing murder charges in UAE, he added.
An NRI suvidha kendra would be established in Jalandhar to provide single window service for all government affairs under one roof.
