गुरु रामदास जी ने ३० रागों में वाणी की रचना की है | आदि ग्रन्थ की सारी वाणी ३१ रागों में है | गुरु रामदास जी की वाणी की सबसे बड़ी विशेषता, सरल वर्णन और आसान भाषा है | आपकी वाणी में राम, रामनाम या हुक्म की महिमा गाई गयी है | आपने निर्मल आचरण और प्रभु भक्ति द्वारा प्रभु मिलाप पर जोर दिया है | गुरु साहिब की वाणी में प्रेम और नम्रता का भाव प्रबल है और इसमें सतगुरु की महिमा का बखान प्रमुखता से किया गया है |
यहाँ ये बताना सही होगा कि गुरु रामदास जी जब सिर्फ सात वर्ष के थे तो पहले माता जी और फिर पिता जी परलोक सिधार गए | आपकी नानी आपको अपने गाँव बासरके, जिला अमृतसर ले आयीं | आप बारह वर्ष की उम्र में अपने गाँव की संगत के साथ गुरु अमरदास जी के दर्शन हेतु गोईंद्वाल गये | गुरु के दर्शन किया तो बस उन्हीं के होकर रह गये | आपके ह्रदय पर गुरु साहिब के चुम्बिकीय व्यक्तित्व और रूहानी उपदेश का इतना प्रभाव पडा कि आपने घर जाने का विचार त्याग दिया और गुरु और संगत की सेवा में मग्न हो गये | आप सुबह गुरु अमरदास जी की सेवा करते, फिर लंगर में सेवा करते और खाली समय में घुगनियाँ (अनाज के उबले हुए दाने ) बेचने का काम करते थे | अगर मोटे तौर पर देखा जाये तो वह ज्यादा पढ़े लिखे नहीं थे लेकिन उनकी रचना में जो साहित्यिक, रूहानियत और अलंकारिक झलक मिलती है उससे पता चलता है कि संतों को ज्यादा संसारी विद्यता की ज़रुरत नहीं पड़ती है वो तो धुर-दरगाह से पढ़े-पढ़ायें आते हैं | उनके अपने तो कोई कर्म होते नहीं हैं, बल्कि ब्रह्मा उनसे पूछता है कि आप की कुंडली में कौन से गृह कहाँ डालूं |
आप बहुत ही गरीब थे और घुगनियाँ बेच कर गुज़ारा करते थे लेकिन दिखने में बड़े ही प्रभावशाली व्यक्तित्व के थे | गुरु अमरदास की धर्मपत्नी एक दिन उनसे अपनी सपुत्री बीबी भानी के बारे में उलाहना दे रही थी कि आप तो बस सत्संग आदि में व्यस्त रहते हो और उधर लडकी ज़वान हो गयी है, आपको फ़िक्र नहीं है | गुरु अमरदास बोले कि तुम्हे अपनी लडकी के लिए कैसा लड़का चाहिये ? उधर रामदास गुरु प्रेम में इतने व्याकुल हो रहे थे कि वे संगत के सेवादारों से कई दिनों से गुरु अमरदास जी के पास से दर्शन की प्रार्थना कर रहे थे और वे उनको उनसे नहीं मिलने दे रहे थे | वे बिचारे पेड़ के नीचे उनका ध्यान कर रहे थे | उधर गुरु अमरदास जी की धर्मपत्नी को छत से रामदास जी दिखे | उनके प्रभावशाली व्यक्तित्व और सुंदर और हष्ट-पुष्ट डील-डौल को देख कर उनकी तरफ इशारा किया कि मुझे अपनी लडकी के लिए ऐसा दामाद चाहिये |
अब संतों को सब कुछ पता होता है | उन्हें अंतर में सब पता था | लेकिन वो दूसरों को माध्यम बना कर काम कर लेते हैं और अपने को ज़ाहिर नहीं करते हैं | उन्होंने एक सेवादार को बुलाया और बोला कि वो जो छह फुट लंबा, हष्ट-पुष्ट सुंदर ज़वान पेड़ के नीचे बैठा है, उसको बोलो कि मैंने उसे बुलाया है | वह सेवादार दौड़ कर गया और बोला कि गुरु अमरदास आपको बुला रहे हैं | रामदास जी को विश्वास नहीं हुआ कि खुद गुरु साहिब उसे बुला रहे हैं | तुरन्त शीघ्रता से गुरु के पास चल दिये | गुरु के दर्शन करके आँखों से आंसू टपकने लगे और चरणों में गिर पड़े | गुरु साहिब ने प्यार से उन्हें उठाया और बोला, "बेटा ! मेरा कहा मानोगे ?" रामदास जी को विश्वास नहीं हुआ कि अकाल पुरुख (परमेश्वर) उनसे पूछ रहा है कि मेरा कहा मानोगे, जबकि पूरी दुनिया उसीके हुक्म से चल रही है | बोले, "गुरु आदेश सिर-माथे पर, मेरा तन-मन-धन आप पर कुर्बान हैं | आप हुक्म दो |" गुरु अमरदास जी बोले, "मेरे दामाद बनोगे ?" रामदास जी को विश्वास नहीं हुआ कि जिस गुरु के दर्शनों ले लिए वो तडपते थे वो उन्हें अपने घर का हिस्सा बनाने की सोच रहा है | एक अनाथ और सांसारिक द्रष्टि से गरीब बालक को इतना बड़ा सम्मान ! फूट-फूट कर रो पड़े और आंसूओं से ही अपनी मंजूरी दे दी |

He kept him busy in the service of Guru and His seekers. He used to do service of Guru in morning and then used to go to langar (mass kitchen) for doing service and in spare time used to sell boiled wheat. Though he was not much educated but his works reflect the literal, spiritual skills of great order which shows that saints do not have to take much worldly education as they are erudite by their spiritual leaning. They do not have any karmas of their own and even the creator asks that which type of destiny do they want for coming to this material world.
Ramdas was very poor and used to earn his livelihood by selling boiled wheat but he possessed a good physique and impressive personality. One day wife of Guru Amardas was chiding him for not seeking a suitable bridegroom for her daughter Bibi Bhani as he remained busy in spiritual affairs. Guru Amardas asked about the her choice about the bridegroom for her daughter. On other hand, Ramdas was very much agitated for the glance of her master and he was pleading with his attendants to give permission to see Guru Amardas which was not being given. He was sitting under the tree, meditating and praying to God. Now, the wife of Guru Amardas saw Ramdas from the terrace and was very much impressed by his impressive personality and handsome figure. She pointed out towards Ramdas and told Guru Amardas that a boy like this would be suitable match for their daughter.
Now, saints know everything beforehand. Guru Amardas was aware of Ramdas. But they make other as their medium and do not try to impose their will. He called one attendant and asked him to call that well built, tall and handsome boy sitting under the tree. That attendant quickly went there and conveyed Guru’s message to Ramdas. He could not believe that Guru himself is calling him. Quickly, he proceeded towards the Guru. After seeing him, he started weeping with love and fell on his feet. Guru Amardas brought him up and asked, “Dear son! Will you do me a favour?” What ! He was shocked as if God is asking him to do a favour when whole world dances on his feet and runs as per His will. He said, “My body, mind and wealth is all yours. You ask me anything.” Guru Sahib said, “Would you like to be my son-in-law?” He was totally shocked. He was an orphan, a poor boy, desperate to see his Guru and Guru is offering him to be his family member. He started weeping bitterly with joy and gratefulness and gave his assent by his tears.
Though Ramdas ji was son-in-law of Guru Amardas but he considered himself as his humble servant. He performed service for Guru and his sangat (group of seekers) and considered the wish of Guru as his Dharma. He says elsewhere about his Guru:
