UPA offers Rs 1,000 cr to Sikh riots victims

Political Bureau

New Delhi, Dec 27 In its continuing efforts to undo the hurt to the Sikh community and regain their trust, the Congress-led UPA government, in a year-end offering of sorts, will be fulfilling its promise of enhancing relief and rehabilitation to the 1984 riot victims, which it had made after tabling the Nanavati report in Parliament.
The enhanced assistance, in financial terms, is expected to be to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore of additional compensation. The matter is to be approved when the Union Cabinet meets this Thursday.
Prime Minister Manmmohan Singh, who had tendered an unconditional apology to the Sikh community in the monsoon session of Parliament after the Nanavati commission report had been tabled, had promised to do his best to ease their pain and suffering. He had also set up two committees to inquire into relief and rehabilitation work as well as look into the scope of increasing compensation that would stand to benefit 3,500 Sikh families. The two committees, headed by special secretary KP Singh and secretary (border management) DK Sankaran, had submitted their reports to Union home secretary VK Duggal on October 29. In specific terms, the committees have recommended compensation of Rs 350-400 crore to the families of victims killed in the violence, while the remaining Rs 600 crore will go towards compensation for families who lost their home or business.
