The Ashram of the late Harbhajan Singh Yogi in Los Angeles, where Nishan Sahib flies below the Star and Spangle banner, something of a confused mixture of two cultures and a symbolism which does represent a belaboured effort at enmeshing two cultures while at the same time a not very thought out action as far as representation of the Sikh banner is concerned. Many Sikh bodies have achieved an enmeshing with the American values in a more balanced and appreciable manner. The recent debate about the Sikh banner of Nishan Sahib at the Lodi gurdwara is likely to remind us of several such aberrations which aren’t great examples to be quoted as precedent.
