The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has renewed its call for a ceasefire in the Hamas-Israeli conflict. The UN agency said on X: “Civilians must be protected. There are no winners in war. The most vulnerable pay the heaviest toll.” There is near-total communication blackout in the bombarded enclave. Palestinians have endured what’s being described as the most difficult and bloodiest night since the beginning of this war. It all started on Friday when the Israeli military spokesperson distributed a map asserting that the al-Shifa Hospital was the headquarters of Hamas’s leadership. Hamas denied this but an hour later, Gaza experienced a complete blackout. At about 7pm local time, a major attack by sea and land took place, concentrated on the northern part of the Gaza Strip, around the vicinity of al-Shifa Hospital. Hundreds of people have been reported killed in those areas and emergency services were not able to get to them in time to help. Families in the south of Gaza have also not been able to reach their relatives who stayed in the north.
Rocket alert sirens have sounded in southern Israel, according to Israeli media, with no immediate report of injuries and damage. The Times of Israel named the communities on alert as Nahal Oz and Magen. The spokesperson for the Israeli army says infantry, armoured, engineering and artillery forces are participating in the operations, “accompanied by heavy [air] fire”. At 8 AM
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, has held a phone conversation with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to discuss the latest in the war and ways to reduce the escalation. During the call, Sheikh Mohammed condemned the targeting of civilians and reiterated that “collective punishment is unacceptable under any pretext”, according to a statement. He also stressed the necessity of continuing to allow the entry of relief convoys and humanitarian aid into Gaza, as well as the importance of coordinating efforts to de-escalate the situation.

Families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas fighters in Gaza have demanded an immediate government explanation about the fate of the captives after the army intensified strikes on the Palestinian territory. The main group representing more than 200 people believed abducted in the October 7 attacks by Hamas sought an immediate meeting with ministers. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement that relatives were angry over the “absolute uncertainty regarding the fate of the hostages held (in Gaza)”
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the UN’s health agency is still unable to reach its staff and health facilities after Israel cut phone and internet services across Gaza. “I’m worried about their safety,” the World Health Organization chief wrote on X. “Evacuation of patients is not possible under such circumstances, nor to find safe shelter. The blackout is also making it impossible for ambulances to reach the injured.”
Tanya Haj-Hassan, from Doctors without Borders, says that for people in Gaza right now there is a “deep sense of feeling alone”. “One of my colleagues today in Gaza said the whole world is watching us getting massacred on TV and just silently watching,” “This is also reflective of a particular type of psychological trauma of feeling completely isolated and feeling like the world is voluntarily silent to your pain and suffering,” she said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Israel to “immediately come out of its state of madness and stop its attacks” on the Gaza Strip. “The Israeli bombardments on Gaza, which intensified last night, have again targeted women, children and innocent civilians, deepening the humanitarian crisis,” he said.
An Al Jazeera correspondent is reporting that Israeli bombing is continuing near the hospital for kidney dialysis in the northern Gaza Strip, while Israeli artillery shelling is hitting east of Rafah in the south. The communications and internet outage throughout Gaza has continued for more than 12 hours, coinciding with the intensification of air strikes and artillery and naval shelling on various areas, our correspondent reported.
The US has told its citizens that they should leave Lebanon “due to the unpredictable security situation” in the country. “The State Department recommends that US citizens in Lebanon leave now, while commercial flights remain available, due to the unpredictable security situation,” it said on X.“There is no guarantee the US government will evacuate private US citizens and their family members in a crisis situation.”
As we reported earlier, protests have been taking place in the occupied West Bank after dawn prayers in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. The General Union of Palestinian Women, meanwhile, has called for a candle vigil
In an interview with an official Israeli radio station, the French ambassador to Israel has said that in a closed session, he was told that Israel is moving towards the second phase of the war. It’s not clear whether that means a ground invasion of Gaza or whether it means something else. The Israeli army has not revealed much information about this. While internet and phone services remain down, Israel announced an expansion of its military operations:
The Israeli army said on Saturday morning that fighter jets hit 150 “terror tunnels, underground combat spaces and additional underground infrastructure” in overnight raids, adding that “several Hamas terrorists were killed”.
Hamas’s armed wing had previously said its fighters were confronting an Israeli ground incursion in Beit Hanoon, in the northern Gaza Strip, and east Bureij, in the centre, adding that “violent engagements are taking place on the ground”.
Late on Friday, the Israeli army said its ground forces were “extending the ground operations tonight”.
The Israeli army said it had increased its strikes “in a very significant way”, while the Qassam Brigades said on Telegram it responded with “salvos of rockets”.
Israeli military spokesman Major Nir Dinar, meanwhile, told AFP: “Our troops are operating inside Gaza as they did yesterday”. Israeli forces had made limited ground incursions on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Israeli military spokesman Major Nir Dinar says the country’s troops continue their ground operations inside the Gaza Strip.
