Your first queston, The amrit itself does not give you salvation. If we beleived that then we would not be too different than Hindus and the janeoo. So it is the message and the ideas behind the amrit that in end help us. and as for your second question, i truly believe that God does not care which path you take to get to him. He sees everyone equally. As Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji said, "na koe hindu, na koe musalmaan".
