Akalis Pvt Ltd
The Akali Dal-BJP alliance in Punjab is an uneasy one at the best of times. But just how bad things really are became apparent when the state BJP unit described the present government as a ‘private limited company’. The provocation: an internal note comprising lists of Akali Dal workers circulated among senior police officers by deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, asking them to keep the 40-odd party workers in good humour. The officials were also warned that a secret agency would be keeping a watch on them and they would face the music if they did not do the needful. The BJP’s anger, though, is not so much at the deputy CM’s bizarre fiat—which has caught flak from all quarters—but a fit of pique at having its own workers left out of the lists! The saffron party is also upset at being excluded from the government advertisement campaign in various newspapers.
