Welcome Pamma ji welcomekaur I'm glad you'ver joined the SPN family :happykudi:

Gorasikh ji welcomekaur
It is good to hear about your inspiration! Which university did you go to if you don't mind me asking? (I understand if you don't want to reveal that on the internet.) I have been educated in the UK. Where I did my undergrad degree, there were not enough Sikhs for a Sikh society. Where I did my postgrad degree the emphasis seemed to be more on socialising and partying. The gurmat related events always had a poor turnout! You are lucky to have found some good sangat :happykaur:
Keep inspiring us! I look forward to your posts....

I like your name. Well there's nothing to conceal about one's education,I have been in Kolkata since birth. I've graduated and post-graduated from Calcutta University.More than that, learnt a lot of practical lessons in the School Of Life, thats where one's real education comes from. A university gives you a degree. makes you literate and well read but life gives you true education.
My spiritual educator was my mom. We grew up waking to the sound of Gurbani because our house was next to a Gurdwara which was made by my grandfather, in the memory of my grandmom, fortunately it is still there and managed well by the sangat of Howrah.
I also had the good fortune of meeting Late Sant Ishwar Singhji of Rarha sahib when I was just eleven. We used to go for his Kirtan when ever he visited Calcutta. He showed the way of naam simran which I still practice.

Hi all,

My name is Satwir Singh Rana. I wanted to gain knowledge about the religion I was born in.

I have always been a believer of a creator but have never been able to justify why a particular religion is important and hence started searching for answers. I have been seeking for the correct path for the best part of my life without any conclusion.

I hope the sangat can lead me to the correct path in the future.

Also, I would like to emphasise that I am a strong believer of Science and hope that any comments made by me at any point will not offend anyone.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to SPN, Satwir ji,

I am personally delighted that you are interested in the way of life which is, after all, your birthright. I admit that I am prejudiced; I love Sikhi and really would not like living any other way. (I tried for 20 years. It didn't work.)

You need to find your own way. of course. What works for me might not work for you. Then again, it might!

It might interest you to know that I am a scientist of sorts by education and training. One of Sikhi's strongest points to me is that Sikhi doesn't ask me to leave my brain outside and believe in a bunch of impossible stuff.

So learn and enjoy your stay! Don't forget to have fun. Remember, chardi kala is a high Sikh value. icecreammunda icecreamkudi

I was searching for some material on Sikhs in Canada and USA and found an article " Sikh Diaspora in Canada & USA". This article doesn't list any author but this was the lecture delivered by me (Kuldeep Singh) at the Oakland University Students on March 7, 2002. I do not know where you got this lecture from. It looks some one has passed on to you my lecture notes. I have been involved in Panthic seva since 1968. I had the privilege of serving as the founder Chairperson of the World Sikh Council and gotten the opportunity to do the seva at the Sikh Gurmat Camp since 1973. Please stay in touch.

As desired, we have put the author information in that article...

http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/history-of-sikhism/5753-history-of-sikh-diaspora-canada-usa.html

Sometimes, articles are circulated in emails without a traceback to their original writers... but the great articles/writings are an object to behold. It is our privilege to meet you via this article.

If you would like to share more of your writings with SPN, we would be delighted to share them with our readership worldwide.

Warm regards

I am a clinical scientist. Anyone who says Sikhism and science are not compatible does not understand Sikhi!

The eternal search for answers never stops. SPN is a wonderful mine of information and great place to get some of those answers. Please share your thoughts as you go along. I am glad you have joined us. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we do!

Kuldip Singh Ji,
I had the privilege of reading one of your excellent articles on the Future of Sikhs written around 19994/95 which was sent to me from New york for publication in the Malaya samachar Daily Newspaper Kuala Lumpur. That article written to prepare us for the upcoming 300th Anniversary of the Khalsa panth was one i will remember for a long time..I wonder if I still have a copy of the Original somewhere..if i manage to find it i will post it on SPN too..an eye-opener.WELCOME to SPN Ji.

Hi, everyone.

My name is Annie, I live in the United States. I grew up Christian, but it didn't feel right for me. I have been studying other religions off and on since I was a teenager, being particularly drawn to Judaism and Hinduism.

Now the time seems right for me to begin learning about Sikhi. The few turbaned Sikhs I have met were very kind, so I was curious to learn more about the kind Sikh people. I especially like how they believe in gender equality, discourage superstition, and try to protect the weak. Those values come very naturally to me.

My main goals in this life are to search for truth (or what rings true to me), and learn as much as I can in the time I have here.

Hello, I am brand new to the Sikh faith.. I mean, I know the tennants, how it was started, I have even been to the Gurdwara. But, as a White (ex-Catholic), I am still fumbling in the dark... I have a few questions, that I hope you can help me with...
1. Prayer, what prayers do you do daily? Is it just the Jahji Sahib? Or others?
2. How do you learn Gurbani? Are there common songs? Where can you learn to sing them or play them?
3. My hair is very VERY short right now (growing it out), am I allowed to wear a turban, or is a chunni better, and is it for everyday or only at prayer?
4. The 5 k's... do you start wearing them when you are new or just when you take amrit?
5. My husband is not Sikh, is that a problem?
6. Is there a home version of the Guru Granth Sahib?

and 7....
If there is a Sikh in South Florida that can tutor me in such things as Gurbani, Punjabi, prayer or anything, please let me know!!!

Any help would be so appreciated!

Re: New to Sikh... what now?

Those are interesting questions. I'm curious too.

You're lucky if you have a supportive husband. I think a lot of husbands might get a little freaked out or insecure if their wife became interested in an unfamiliar religion.
