Controversial Uneducated Comments By Sajjid Khan On A Commendable Gatka Performance At India's Got Talent Spark Co

This is a wake up call for us Sikhs, thanks to the ignorance of the Muslim judge. The tradition of Gatka as martial arts is very important to be learnt.

I hope SGPC and Akal Takhat rather than asking for apologies from the judge should invest money in every Gurdwara where Gatka should be taught from the very young age.

Sajjid Khan was uncouth and showed his cultural ignorance whether it was scripted or not is irrelevant.

On the other side, Bhagat Singh makes a good point about the danger of young kids playing with swords. They should be taught the art with sticks and when they are old enough, they can use the swords.

The idea is to hone the techniques from the very young age and be proud of this wonderful tradition.

Ravinder Pal Singh ji,

I'd like to know if Sajjid Khan is there, and if he is, does he say anything about last week's fiasco and, if so, what?

If he isn't there, is anything said at all about last week's Sikhs.

In short, any reference to this debacle. If nothing is said, that is also noteworthy.

Thanks very much!

Initally we could not view the programme because there was no electricity in our area but later on there was nothing said on this topic in th entire episode

I completely agree with your line of reasoning and I will go further and say that I would defend a similar friend, even not a friend, I believe its my duty and obligation, I will still remain a friend with that person even if he/she condemns my actions for his/her defense. I will keep Mr. Khan (judge) in the same list.

MY comments were in jest, as your friend thought Sikhs were a bit uncouth, hence why I did the :p. I guess you missed that.

But on a serious note, we can learn from Jains, but for a Sikh, the Jain world view does only makes up a partial view.

Hence my comments to Eropa, no point having Gyan, with Dhyan!

But you have no comment about Gyan and Dhyan?

You cannot defend sheer ignorance!

Sikh means to learn, the opposite of ignorance. If someone is ignorant, then one cannot defend the indefensible.

The Jain view is different from Mr Khan. They fundementally disagree with the Sikh view, because they know what we Sikhs are actually about, i.e. not just Gyan, but Dhyan as well, wheras Mr Khan appeared to be clueless, and it took another judge to point out to him, that this discipline is about defence, in other words it is the duty of every Sikh not only to be a Saint, but also a Soldier!

If you disagree with this fundemental point of Sikhi, then please present your reasoning?

I dont think there is any point in talking about the weak points in his argument like how he thought gatka was violent, that's just ignorant. No need to grind on that.
But what seems to be the strong point he makes is that

His point is not about kids doing martial arts but kids playing with sharp blades! and playing with sharp blades on TV!

I have yet to hear anything that remotely comes close to tackling this point.

PS - Does anyone see 5yr olds with swords here in this video of shaolin martial artists?
YouTube- ‪Shaolin Monks Stage Show‬‎

I think the kid was 7, and I learned at my Martial arts club to use weapons (and denfence of them) from about 5.

For me martial arts are a physical art form (something I am sure an artist like you can appreciate that. In Ghatka, and Shastarvidya there is real beauty in their movements.

Find out who Bodhidharma was Bhagat Singh :)

I did miss that totally. I am occasionally clueless, but usually my sense of humour wins out in the end.

And I rarely carry a grudge - unless it's something really major like killing my family or burning down Akal Takht. I'm still working on that.

There is very little I agree with in the Jain religion, starting with its atheistic nature right through its insanely (to me) compulsive ahimsa.
And some very weird (to me) beliefs, like not eating root veggies because they have lots of souls. (Did you know there are people trying to grow potatoes on a vine just so Jains can have french fries? I tried to grow them hydroponically myself, without success.) Life without ginger and garlic and onions and even haldi (horrors!) just does not appeal to me.

I am a Sikh and a fighter when necessary swordfightand proud of it . Still I miss the calm presence of the lady who could sit on the grass and have a flock of sparrows land and actually walk onto her.

I am opposed to the running of and fighting of Bulls in Spain. A very large percentage of the Spanish will consider my statement to be out of ignorance, they may have religious or other reasons behind this act.

In this event another Judge disagreed with Mr. Khan so did many others who watched the show. Mr. Khan did his duty and rendered his opinion. We should be able to tolerate difference of opinion and continue to display our traditions.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment that his comments were out of ignorance. In my opinion ignorance can be categorized in two forms. when the actions of an individual are wrong and he knew it before or he did not know. Mr Khan's comments do not fall in either of these category.

Mr Khan is not a Jaini and in no way represent Jain view in this equation his opinion are his alone. He is one of the pacifists, there are thousands of them in the world. Even though I study Sri Guru Granth Sahib I do not represent the view of Sikhs, only my own, and I am not immune from ignorance and hope to eliminate the ignorance that exists with in me. I do not have the capability to remove ignorance from the world and I do not believe there is any individual in this whole world who does not have the desire to be ignorance free.

As far as Gyan and Dhyan is concerned. I study our Granth with Dhyan ( pay attention to the minor details with my ability to question and reason) to me this is Dhyan. I practice what I learned during Dhyan in the laboratory of life. I do this in the pursuit of Gyan. This is the relationship of Gyan and Dhyan and this is my personal opinion only and I draw this as Guidance from Sri Guru Granth Sahib but I profess it as my own beliefs and my actions only represent my self.

What is the relevance of self defence and martial arts to killing a bull in a ring?

What is so difficult to understand about self defence?

And I respectfully disagree with your comments.

He did not understand what the demo was for. He did not even understand it was a martial art for self defence. That is pure ignorance. He viewed it as some sort of thuggery!

If there had been say Chinese martial artists doing the same thing, I would bet my life he would have no problem.

He was simply ignorant to the facts:

1) Sikhs have a martial art ( he didn’t seem to know what shastarvidya and gatka was)
2) They use it for self defence
3) The martial trait is part and parcel of the Sikh faith.

I didn’t say he was a Jain, and if you are studying the Guru Granth Sahib ji, then understand the Spiritual and Temporal concept.

It is represented in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, it is also represented physically through our symbols and also physical through the Harmandhir Sahib and the Akal Takht.

We were asked to practice Gyan by our Guru’s in other words learn about things, use the mind and expand your spirituality. BUT also pay attention to Dhyan, on what happens around us in the Temporal affairs. This Gyan we accumulate can then be practiced by Dhyan.

Miri Piri – Spiritual Temporal

Shakti Bhakhti – Physical Power , Meditation

These concepts reiterate our spirituality and our physical side.

The two coexist and affect one another. The Harmandhir Sahib was on purpose built a few feet Higher than the Akal Takht so we would realise, without our spirituality our temporal side is to no avail.

We have been instructed by our Guru’s to develop both our minds and bodies, as they are our aid spirituality. Spirituality in turn is our aid to our mind and body.

We exercise the mind through gaining knowledge that helps us to understand Bani i.e. we study, science, history, arts etc etc

We exercise our body through physical discipline through martial arts, weight training etc.

So “when all other means have failed, we are ready to draw the sword” or as Guru Nanak says “if you wish to play the game of love, be ready to make a ball out of your head”

BY doing all three of these things we control:

Kaam – lust and sexual obsession
Krodh – Anger Stubbornness
Moh – Materialism
Lobh – Greed
Ahankhar – Egotism.

That’s not what I mean by Dhyan (see above).

SS AKAL.

I respecfully agreed with Tejwant Singh Ji to ignore the whole issue but concentrate on teaching our youth century old martial art called GATKA by SPGC or Sikh associations to professionalism like many other marshal arts in the world.

I Also agree with BhagatSingh Ji to have the kids do practice or demonstrate their skills with small stick instead of a sharp object or sharp swords . Swords or any other weapons were used in real danger to defend our selves.

I read your response very carefully and I believe our perceptions are completely different. In conclusion I believe that we both can agree that we should continue to participate in, and demonstrate, our traditions on the world stage and be open to criticisms. I enjoyed the display of Gatka and will continue to watch it and invite my non Sikh friends to do so as well. I appreciate and respect your views.swordfight

By "perception" do you mean perception of Sikhism, or perception of what Sajjid Khan said?

I think only a fool would give a sharp object to an untrained person (be they adult or child).

I have known highly skilled Martial artists from 4 years old upwards.

This kid was 7 years old.
