Creation
God created the universe on His own. (Adi Granth: 250) He created all the objects himself (A:ka:r) (Adi Granth 250) He Himself is subtle and menifest: He became particle (asthool) from wave (sookham). (Adi Granth: 250) The double slit experiment explains that atom is both a wave and particle. This is the very nature of the universe. Matter behaves differently when interacting with thoughts or the mind. Adi Granth also mentions that mind or consciousness and matter are interchangeable and that the spirit of God rests within both: “God Himself is the consciousness of His Creation.” (Adi Granth: 1076). He is present everywhere and in everything of his creation. He is not visible but can be seen through His nature. Whatever is visible it is He is various forms of His creation. (Adi Granth 1076) He created the entire expanse and takes care of all Himself. (Adi Granth: 1076)
The way the wave comes out of water in different ways and then it merges into the water. (Adi Granth: 1076) He is the doer Himself and He is the cause and effect. After creating the universe all the earths were placed at the right place. (Adi Granth: 1076) He Himself is in secrecy: He Himself is out in the open; He Himself expands His self.
He created all figures (a:ka:r) and became with attributes from attribute-less. (Adi Granth: 250) “God is both formless and has countless forms in the shape of his creation. God is without attributes but its attributes can be enjoyed through His creation. ”(Adi Granth: 250) He has spread the three attributes (Rajo, sato, tmo) differently. He made the objects visible from attribute-less to attributes. He created the universe in various methods. He created the fear of death through the attachment to the life. He is away from life and death Himself. His expanse has no limits. (Adi Granth: 250)
There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds, and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above. You cannot find these details even in Vedas even when one searches for them all, until one grows weary. The scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds, but in reality, there is only One Universe. If someone tries to write an account of this, one will surely finish oneself before one finishes writing it. All places belong to the Supreme Lord God. According to the homes in which they are placed, so are His creatures named. He Himself is the Doer, the Cause of causes.
Many millions are the fields of creation and the galaxies. Many millions are the etheric skies and the solar systems. Many millions are the divine incarnations. In so many ways, He has unfolded Himself. So many times, He has expanded His expansion. Forever and ever, He is the One, the One Universal Creator. Many millions are created in various forms. From God they emanate, and into God they merge once again. His limits are not known to anyone. God exists Himself and by Himself. There are countless worlds and nether regions; beyond anyone’s counting capability. He is the Creator, the Lord of the Universe; He creates it, and He destroys it.
God’s Name is behind all the manifestation of the universe. Without His Name, there is no place at all. What were the season, month, date, day, time, and the moment of creation of the universe? The religious scholars cannot find the time of creation. The Pundits cannot find it from Puraanas and the Qazis do not find in the Qur’an. Even the experts in meditation, the yogis do not know the day and date; month or season of His creation. God, The Creator alone knows.
From void He created moon, sun and the firmament, The moon and the sun, were the two lamps which He placed in the sky home. The sun and moon take shifts to provide light to the world, moon replacing the sun and vice versa.
From void He created air and water. Earth was placed in air binding it with water and fire. He has established the earth to act as a place of worship for the being among air, water and fire. Then the bodies were created in many colours and forms. He then created Brahma, chit (consciousness), time and space as well as Vedas. Many millions of stones and trees have been produced. His creation includes many millions winds, waters and fires; the countries, realms of the world and the moons, suns and stars. When he himself fashioned the visible world of the creation, He made the world subject to the three dispositions. (Adi Granth:5:291:19)
Big bang remains the most accepted theory in science. Sikhs do not contradict science, because it doesn't conflict with Sikh Scriptures or beliefs. Actually scientists are now discovering the concepts that were written in Sikh scriptures centuries ago. Sikh Gurus told their followers centuries ago not to use tobacco, drugs or drink alcohol. Science has confirmed that the overuse of alcohol is often dangerous and actually some people are genetically predisposed to become hooked in to alcohol. While studies suggest that the moderate use of alcohol may extend one’s life, its overuse can be dangerous. It continues to results in thousands of deaths every year. Habit of smoking too, has proved deadliest.
As against the big bang Adi Granth mentions “Unfolding the creation was done in many ways (not like just a big bang) and many times. He has been and will have to be the only One as a universal creator.” (Adi Granth: 276).
God is the creator. He made day and night. (Adi Granth 1003) All expansion was with one word. Millions of rivers (of matter) started flowing around. (Adi Granth: 3) God first created air then water from air and water was used to create the three worlds. He then infused His light in each heart.” (Adi Granth 19) Sun and moon were created from shoonya. His light spread in three worlds. He meditated in shoonya; the vast and indescribable. Earth and sky were also created from shoonya. The sky stayed without any pillar on the instrument of truth. After Jungle, greenery, and water in three worlds, four Vedas and four types of creations; regions, continents and all what is in light were all created by his one word or by His order. Installing three worlds, He created earth and Maya which He created and destroyed Himself. (Adi Granth: 1037)
The creator resides in creation and the creation is in the God. (Adi Granth: 1381) According to it the creation process involved releasing large amounts of Hydrogen from the big bang. This hydrogen combined to form Helium and other heavier gases including oxygen. Combination of hydrogen and oxygen created water and life originated from water. “Air came from the True Lord. From air came water. The three worlds were created from water. He entered as a spirit in the form of light in each heart.” (Adi Granth 19)
The universe was created by God in many ways. Guru Nanak has given eight stages of creation of universe. These are Pre-Universe Era, Cosmic Haze Era, Creator's Era, Creation of the present Universe, Creation of Cosmic Bodies, Solar Systems and Earth, Creation of Atmosphere and Troposphere and Water Bodies, Creation of Biosphere and Creation of Mankind. He explains the origin of the universe and describes the process of evolution of the universe and the primordial conditions of the pre-cosmic era in Maru Bani. (Adi Granth, p.1335) Sequence of Creation as per Eastern Philosophy is Dark-light-sound-air-ether-fire-water-earth. The process described is creation, development, decay and annihilation/assimilation. The bodies are described as having the same elements and type of energy as exists in the entire universe and nothing different. He has bound the entire matter by His own thread. (Adi Granth 276)
Concept of Creation in Adi Granth:
The universe originates from the Word (sabd) and assimilates with the Word. It again originates from the Word.
Philosophy of Creation
According to Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the One and the only One God has created the entire universe. The God is the Greatest; His place is the highest. His extent and limits cannot be known. Only the one who can become greater and higher as Him, can know Him and fathom His limits , . No being can exactly say how the universe was created, as the ‘created’ cannot know how the Creator carried out the creation.
The time of writing and compilation of the material shows that it was done much before the currency of modern science and scientific theories in vogue now. This shows that Guru Nanak and the other contributors of Sri Guru Granth Sahib were much ahead of their times. Their description and theories not only stand the test of the day but also provide guidelines for future scientific research as well.
Record of Creation in Adi Granth (Sri Guru Granth Sahib)
Who was the Creator? When did He create the universe? How did he Create the universe? What was the process of creation?
God Before the Creation. He remained in utter darkness as He so pleased. (Adi Granth, 1282). Then, He revealed Himself.). The Lord emerged from the darkness Himself. (Adi Granth, M 1:463, 1036). (Adi Granth, M 1, pp. 1026, M 3: 949,1081,1061)
Sünya is compared to a primal void where God exists in its full effulgence. The creation appears when God Wills out of this sünya phase. Adi Granth describes the primordial trance of God before the creation process starts as a manifestation of God. For countless days, He remained invisible; He remained absorbed in Sünya; For countless days, there was utter darkness. Then the Creator revealed Himself. (Adi Granth, M. 5, p. 1081)
According to the Adi Granth the One and the only One God has created the entire universe. .The entire universe originated from Him alone. “God alone knows when He created the universe” . “In this sphere, there are many types of gases (airs), liquids (waters) and fires (energies). There are several worldly gods transforming beings into numerous forms and colors and clad in diverse attires. There are many earths and mountains.... There are numerous rain gods, moons, suns, constellations and countries”. “There is no limit to the creation”. “No one can describe the limit of various countries, worlds and universes as there is no end. In every part of light there is a shape of beings” . “The continents and underworlds are billions; beyond anyone’s count.”
He was in Sunn smadhi. The entire universe was created by the Lord after remaining in utter darkness for ages (36 ages). He emerged from this darkness (Sunn) Himself and gave Himself a Name. With His emergence spread the Light around . The Light of the Lord spread everywhere. When in light, the Lord probably felt lonely and thought of creating the universe as a play for Himself.
He created the universe and millions of rivers with one sound of His order. All the segments and continents in the universe were created with one sound of His order alone. The light energy being at the base and the sound energy being the activating force, the creation of universe was initiated. He uttered the sound to create the universe. This sound is considered to be His Name or Sabd. The universe was created by the God through Word (sabd) and it assimilates in Him through the Word; it goes on getting new shapes till assimilated. . From the True God came the air and from air came the water. From water He created the universe and in every element of the universe He entered in the form of light.
He created the universe in many different ways so that everything originates from the God and merges into it. He created billions of stars, suns and planets. He created billions of countries and earths and on them He created water, land and mountains. He mixed water, fire and air to create the living beings on earth. The entire universe is made of water and water exists everywhere. There are billions of universes, skies and Netherlands. There are billions of places of worship. The word is the place of residence of the God and He stays in it. He creates and cares Himself.
However, this entire darkness did not end with His emergence. Both light and dark remained together and continues to be so. Physically speaking, the light makes us to see things while the dark hides things from us. This energy plays with our lives as the beings are made of energy themselves. We observe only a part of the play; the balance remains unobserved.
The God and His creation can be understood by the one who is either greater than the God or has become like Him. It is futile to observe an egg sitting in the egg and finding facts about the Creator, creation time and the process and outer dimensions of the egg. The calculations by the scientists about the date and process of creation are not true as all the observations made by the scientists are based on Maya of the God and not the Truth. It is impossible to observe the past without sixth sense. The First Guru questions, “What was the time, date, month, season when the universe was created?” He puts the question and provides the answer too: “No pundit (worldly knowledgeable Hindu) has known the time otherwise it would have been recorded in ancient Hindu scriptures. No Muslim scholar (Qazi) has yet known this; otherwise it would have been recorded in Quran. Neither any ascetic nor anyone else has known the date, month or season when the universe was created. No living person has lived to tell the tale of the origin and no one has yet seen it. No one can measure the spread of universe”.
Creation of galaxies, stars, planetary systems and earth
Creating His own self the God was supremely rejoiced and evaluated His Self… When He so willed, He created the world and without support sustained the firmament.... By His will, the God has created the creation and watches overall. He founded the continents, solar systems and nether worlds. From the absolute self he became manifest in the universe. No one knows His limit. Dark matter is many more times than the observable universe.
He created all parts of universe, the galaxies and the nether worlds from void. He founded the continents, solar systems and underworlds and from the secret he continued His creation. Establishing the nine regions, seven continents, fourteen worlds, three qualities, four ages, and the four sources of creation, the God placed them all in His mansion . He created millions of nether world and skies. The parts of the universe and the nether world are billions and billions and beyond count. God created the entire world with ease and the light of the God spread in all the three worlds i.e., land, water and sea. From void He created moon, sun and the firmament. The moon and the sun, were the two lamps which He placed in the sky home. The sun merges in the house of the moon (after the day). No one knows the expanse of the universe. Take millions of tons of paper, unlimited amount of ink and start writing at the speed of wind even then you cannot describe Him .
Comparing thought processes of various philosophers, religions and science with thought process fo,llowed in Adi Granth following similarities and distinctions are found:
1. According to Adi Granth, the universe was created from a single entity and will get assimilated into the same entity; the entity that is the God. No one else created the universe. Science does not follow this approach but all major religions except Buddhism accept this.
2. According to Adi Granth, the Lord Himself directs the evolution of the world of five elements; He Himself infuses the five senses into it. He creates and recreates. After creating He dismantles and rebuilds what He has demolished. He established the earth as a home of Dharma. Nights, days, weeks and seasons bring change; air, water, fire and nether regions build and rebuild. In the midst of these, He placed earth and on it various species of beings with unlimited and endless names. This is how the differences between the creation by God and created by God are amply explained. The major religions accept this theory of God as the Creator.
3. According to Adi Granth, the world which we see is actually the Maya. Adi Granth states that Maya is an illusion. It is the creation and not the creator. It is the effect and not the cause. Until we find out the cause we cannot reach the right conclusion. ‘Maya or material is observable hence the subject of scientific study. The real cause behind Maya or matter, however, is not the subject of science hence it is unable to reach to the real cause.
4. The illusion of Maya, according to Adi Granth, can be removed only through sabd. A true guru only can give a true sabd, help reach the ultimate reality, God and can help understand, identify and assimilate with Him. God is the ultimate destination of the entire universe. Hinduism advocates this though other religions have different thought processes. Scientists too, do not follow this concept.
5. There was utter darkness before God appeared and started the creation process as per Adi Granth. Only Hinduism accepts this science and other religions do not agree with it.
6. Adi Granth describes the cause of the creation of the universe as the loneliness of the Lord. He created the universe to have a play for Himself to avoid His loneliness. Thus the effect was the emergence of play in the form of the universe. Other religions and scientists, however, differ with it.
7. As per Adi Granth the entire universe is ever-changing energy. Scientists and other religious thoughts differ on this.
8. As per Adi Granth energy creation is a one-time effort. The energy neither increases nor decreases. This is in consonance with science. Other religions do not ascribe to it.
9. The ever-changing energy keeps on taking various forms e.g., liquid, gas or solid. The basic element of all energies remains light as is in science. Some religions however, do not accept this.
10. The universe was created from light energy which remains the chief controller of the entire change process of the universe in the form of the soul. Light as a soul is the source of control of the universe by God. Only Hinduism accepts this, science and other religions do not agree to it.
11. The sound created by God was a triggering force for the expansion of the light in the form of photons. Hinduism and Islam ascribe to it. No other religion and science ascribe to it.
12. The universe was created in a smooth, gradual process. It negates the big bang theory.
13. The sequence of creation of elements was light-sound-air (gas)-water-ether-fire-earth-life.
14. Life too was created by God in many ways and the sources of creation are eggs, earth, womb and sweat. Science however does not agree with it in its entirety.
15. Everything in the universe can be considered alive because of its continuous change and taking any form or shape at any time. The man dies; his body is burnt, buried or eaten by fish/eagles. It changes into further life thereafter. Science does not agree with it.
16. As per Adi Granth there is a continuous system. Life comes after death and death after life which is a natural and continuing process. This is in consonance with religions of the east but not with that of the West and the science.
17. Shoonya or sunn is not ‘nothing’. It can be called the Centre of concentrated energy because numerals are towards the negative sides and positive side of it i.e., -2. -1, 0, 1, 2 etc. The latest scientific theories are also in consonance with this. All the universal elements have negatives and positives which change with each other i.e., the negatives into positives and vice versa are in consonance with modern theories.
18. According to Adi Granth, the earth is spherical while most of the other religions and some scientists say the earth to be flat.

He made the objects visible from attribute-less to attributes. He created the universe in various methods. He created the fear of death through the attachment to the life.
