ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਮਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਪਿਤਾ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਾ ॥

Guru is mother, the father, the master and transcendent Lord.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸਖਾ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਬੰਧਿਪ ਸਹੋਦਰਾ ॥

Guru is a friend the destroyer of ignorance, a relative and a brother.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਮੰਤੁ ਨਿਰੋਧਰਾ ॥

Guru is the bestowal, the teacher of God’s name. Guru’s lesson is distinct.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸ ਪਰਾ ॥

Guru is the image of peace truth and intellect. Guru is the touchstone that transforms.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੋਵਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਮਜਨੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਾ ॥

Guru is a shrine, pool of nectar; to attain guru’s divine knowledge is beyond imagination.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਪ ਹਰਤਾ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਵਿਤ ਕਰਾ ॥

Guru is the Creator, the destroyer of sins; Guru purifies the sinners.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਮੰਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਉਧਰਾ ॥

Guru exists from the beginning, for a long time, for ages. Reciting God through guru’s teaching attains salvation.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਮ ਮੂੜ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਾ ॥

O God; unite me with the guru by your grace; that I the sinner swim across holding on to him

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਮਸਕਰਾ ॥੧॥

Guru the true guru the God the transcendent Lord the guru; Nanak prays and pays his regard to guru the God. ||1||

Serve the guru O my dear, and recite the name of God.

ਮੰਞਹੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

Do not have to go far away. You can become Godly staying at home.

ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਦਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਤਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥

Become Godly in your home through devotion and truthfulness.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ

Those blessed by God find worshipping the guru easy.

ਨਾਮੋ ਬੀਜੇ ਨਾਮੋ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

Seed the name grow the name and enshrine God’s name in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

O Nanak, the honor of obtaining the true name is pre-ordained.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਜਾ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

O dear; God’s name tastes sweet, if you taste it with love.

ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੁ ਮੁਯੇ ਜੀਉ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

O tongue; taste the sublime essence of God. It eliminates other tastes.

ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਏ ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥

By God’s grace through guru’s teaching the divine taste entices forever.

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥

Attain peace reciting God’s name and merge in it.

ਨਾਮੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥

Born through name die through name and merge with Him through name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਲਵਾਏ ॥੨॥

O Nanak; the name is acquired through guru’s teaching. He guides you. ||2||

ਏਹ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਧਨ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਿ ਸਿਧਾਏ ॥

It is strange, like the husband goes away leaving the wife behind.

ਦੂਜੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੋਭਿ ਲੁਭਾਏ ॥

In duality no one has ever found peace, O dear; the greedy is enticed by greed.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਭਿ ਲੁਭਾਏ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਓਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

Enticed by greed one becomes doubtful. Still attains peace if God blesses!

ਚਾਕਰੀ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ਆਪੁ ਵੇਚਿ ਧਰਮੁਗਵਾਏ ॥

Doing strange things is painful. It is just selling himself by losing faith.

ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਨ ਟਿਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥
Attracted by the worldly pleasure cannot control and suffers pain forever.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਦੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੩॥
O Nanak the pain of worldly wealth departs enshrining guru’s teaching in the mind. ||3||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
The self-willed ignorant fool my friend; does not enshrine guru’s teaching in the heart.
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਅੰਧੁ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
The delusion of worldly wealth makes you blind O friend; how can you find the way to God?
ਕਿਉ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ॥
How can one find the way without guru’s service? The self-willed brags about himself;
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ
God’s servants are always content focusing their mind humbly to guru.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥
Those whom God is kind; praise God all the time!
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥
O Nanak the jewel of God’s name is the beneficial in the world and God makes one follow. ||4||5||7||

He whose company gives you happiness, call him the guru.

If God bestows His grace; one realizes that the guru is God

ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆਸਦਾ ਉਰਿਧਾਰਿ

Love of guru’s teaching is the true worship of God. The devotee keeps his beloved enshrined in his heart.

ਰਵਨੀ ਰਵੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਹੀ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

By merely saying God, the bonds of ego do not break and the doubt does not depart.

ਜਿਨਾ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਮੰਤੁ ॥

Those who do not forget God while breathing or eating are dyed by God’s name.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸਿ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ॥੧॥

O Nanak they are complete saints and praiseworthy. ||1||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੂਟੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥

Meeting the guru eliminates ego; then only saying God means anything? ||2|| page 353

One who serves the guru like a servant falls in love with God’s name.

You are true primal Lord from the beginning and forever.

Waahey Guru waahey Guru God God O Waahay guru;

ਸਭੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਰਾਗੰਨ ਕੇ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਦਸ ਬੀਸ

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥Hymn:

ਙਣਿ ਘਾਲੇ ਸਭ ਦਿਵਸ ਸਾਸ ਨਹ ਬਢਨ ਘਟਨ ਤਿਲੁ ਸਾਰ ॥

Counts days and breaths. Neither they increase or decrease at all.

ਜੀਵਨ ਲੋਰਹਿ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਊ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥

Those who long to live in doubt and emotional attachment, O Nanak, are fools. ||1||


ਸੋ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਿਹ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਪਿਆ ॥

Those who recite God while alive, live forever.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਛਪਿਆ ॥੨੧॥

They will be well known, cannot stay hidden. ||21||


ਜਉ ਜਾਨੈ ਹਉ ਭਗਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥

When he believes that he is a devotee and has knowledge!

ਆਗੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੀ ॥

Hereafter God does not accept at all?

ਜਉ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਥਨੀ ਕਰਤਾ ॥

When he believes to be a preacher (kathakar).

ਬਿਆਪਾਰੀ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਜਿਉ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥

He is like a peddler wandering all over.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

But one who conquers his ego in the company of devotees.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੇ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੨੪॥

O Nanak, he realizes God

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਧਾਰੀ ਸਭ ਧਰਨਾ ॥

Reciting God; God created the creation.

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ॥

Reciting God the Creator does everything.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕੀਓ ਸਗਲ ਅਕਾਰਾ ॥

Reciting God; God created the universe.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥

God is realized through recitation.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥

By His grace whoever He bestows realization!

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੧॥

O Nanak those guru-willed realize God by reciting Him. ||8||1||

ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ॥

O destroyer of suffering of the humble and the protector of orphans.

I like it, you've started edited your script to hammer home a "specific" message, tailor made desi style. May I suggest each verse is identified from within SGGSJ so as to help the reader locate if need be. Just one for example, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ is page 273. Otherwise, beautifully translated.

When I get the time I do read your translations, there are areas for development, but all in all, for joy reading it's beautiful. If anything, glossary of terms in English would be highly recommended. Such terms as, karm, dharm, seva, joon, janam, nam, simran, atman, parmatma, gur prasad, surat, dhun, shabd, yogi, yog, amrit, sach khand, sachiar, maya, madho, manmukh, gurmukh, mool, mantra, hukam, kal, akal, slok, mahala, sahaj, anhad shabd, anubhav prakash, gunas, darshan, chit, and much more. This will help beginners n readers in general to familiarise themselves with the vocabulary used. And, in some instances explanations behind metaphors n imagery used will also be an eye opener for the aspirant reader of Gurbani.

Indian big name scholars refused to help me. he did not know indian words. he did not want to know indian words. he said; make it only english. so it is english translation for those who do not know indian. it is usable worldwide. he asked me to make my own words. so i did.. i did not use any punjabi or indian words. so it is english translation and it is for all english speaking people. indian people can read the indian words in indian versions or other translations.. One track minded Indian scholars do not like this kind of wording any way. I have only english versaion of my sggs translation which is available on

Indian big name scholars refused to help me. he did not know indian words. he did not want to know indian words. he said; make it only english. so it is english translation for those who do not know indian. it is usable worldwide. he asked me to make my own words. so i did.. i did not use any punjabi or indian words. so it is english translation and it is for all english speaking people. indian people can read the indian words in indian versions or other translations.. One who has faith and respect for the guru in his mind!

ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥

That person misses God.

ਭਗਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਇ ॥

Everbody calls him God’s devotee in the world.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਏਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

Who has One God in his mind!

ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਰਹਤ ॥

True are his actions; true are his ways.

ਸਚੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਤਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਹਤ ॥

True is his heart; truth he speaks.

ਸਾਚੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

True is his vision; true is his creation.

ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ॥

He deals with truth and spreads truth.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

One who recognizes the supreme Lord as true!

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ॥੮॥੧੫॥

O Nanak, that humble being merges in the truth. ||8||15||

people write books and they all have sponsors to publish their books. i published 21 books so far and continuing. i pay for my books from my pocket all the time. i do not know who are the sponsors and how to find them. at the same time i am getting old. i will not be able to re translate sggs with punjabi words and english equivalent of them. The devotee who lives with the guru!

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਹੈ ॥

Obeys guru’s teaching intently in his mind.

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਜਨਾਵੈ ॥

He who does not have any ego?

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

Always recites the name of God in his mind intently.

ਮਨੁ ਬੇਚੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

One who sells his mind to the guru!

ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

That humble servant's affairs are resolved.

ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੀ ॥

One who becomes selfless doing service?

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥

Shall attain divine knowledge.(realize God)

ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਇਆ ਪਰਿਆ ਤਉ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥

Wandering allover I have come to Your refuge O God!

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਅਪਨੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

This is Nanak's prayer O God: guide me to Your worship. ||1||

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥Ashtapadee:

ਜਾਚਕ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

I am a beggar; begging for this gift from You:

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

Be kind and bless me with God’s name.

With each and every breath, I recite You, O God.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥

May I enshrine affection for Your lotus feet?

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਿ ॥

May I perform devotional worship to God each and every day!

ਏਕ ਓਟ ਏਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥

You are my only shelter, my only resolve.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

Nanak begs for the true name of God. ||1||

ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥

Guru gave lesson of knowledge, the darkness of ignorance is destroyed.

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

By God’s grace; I surrendered to the saint, the mind is enlightened. ||1||

In the society of saints, I see God in me.

Who knows where is heaven?

ਜਾਨ ਜਾਨ ਸਭ ਕਹਹਿ ਤਹਾ ਹੀ

Everyone claims again and again: it is there: it is there!
