ਜਾਗਲੇਹੁਰੇਮਨਾਜਾਗਲੇਹੁਕਹਾਗਾਫਲਸੋਇਆ॥

Wake up, O mind! Wake up! O lazy; why are you sleeping?

ਜੋਤਨੁਉਪਜਿਆਸੰਗਹੀਸੋਭੀਸੰਗਿਨਹੋਇਆ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

That body you were born with; shall not go with you in the end. ||1||Pause||

ਮਾਤਪਿਤਾਸੁਤਬੰਧਜਨਹਿਤੁਜਾਸਿਉਕੀਨਾ

Mother, father, children and relatives whom you love;

ਜੀਉਛੂਟਿਓਜਬਦੇਹਤੇਡਾਰਿਅਗਨਿਮੈਦੀਨਾ॥੧॥

Will throw your body in the fire when your soul departs from it; ||1||

ਜੀਵਤਲਉਬਿਉਹਾਰੁਹੈਜਗਕਉਤੁਮਜਾਨਉ

The world deals with the living; that is how the world is; know that.

ਨਾਨਕਹਰਿਗੁਨਗਾਇਲੈਸਭਸੁਫਨਸਮਾਨਉ॥੨॥੨॥

O Nanak, sing praises of the Lord; everything is like a dream. ||2||2||

ਬਗਾ ਬਗੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਵਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ॥

They wear white clean clothes and go to pilgrimage.

ਘੁਟਿਘੁਟਿਜੀਆਖਾਵਣੇਬਗੇਨਾਕਹੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ॥੩॥

They kill and eat the living beings, how can you call themselves clean white. ||3||

ਸਿੰਮਲਰੁਖੁਸਰੀਰੁਮੈਮੈਜਨਦੇਖਿਭੁਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ॥

The body is like the simmal tree; people are mistaken like the parrots.

ਸੇਫਲਕੰਮਿਨਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀਤੇਗੁਣਮੈਤਨਿਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ॥੪॥

Its fruits are useless; same qualities are in the body. ||4||

ਅੰਧੁਲੈਭਾਰੁਉਠਾਇਆਡੂਗਰਵਾਟਬਹੁਤੁ॥

The blind carries a heavy load and long journey through high mountains.

ਅਖੀਲੋੜੀਨਾਲਹਾਹਉਚੜਿਲੰਘਾਕਿਤੁ॥੫॥

My eyes cannot see, how can I climb up and cross over the mountain? ||5||

ਚਾਕਰੀਆਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਅਵਰਸਿਆਣਪਕਿਤੁ॥

What good does it do to serve, and be good, and be clever?

ਨਾਨਕਨਾਮੁਸਮਾਲਿਤੂੰਬਧਾਛੁਟਹਿਜਿਤੁ॥੬॥੧॥੩॥

O Nanak, recite God’s name, it will free you from chains. ||6||1||3||

ਭਾਂਡਾਹਛਾਸੋਇਜੋਤਿਸੁਭਾਵਸੀ॥

The pot which is pleasing to God, is pure.

ਭਾਂਡਾਅਤਿਮਲੀਣੁਧੋਤਾਹਛਾਨਹੋਇਸੀ॥

The filthiest vessel or pot does not become pure just by washing.

ਗੁਰੂਦੁਆਰੈਹੋਇਸੋਝੀਪਾਇਸੀ॥

The realization comes at guru’s refuge.

ਏਤੁਦੁਆਰੈਧੋਇਹਛਾਹੋਇਸੀ॥

By washing at guru’s refuge it becomes pure.

ਮੈਲੇਹਛੇਕਾਵੀਚਾਰੁਆਪਿਵਰਤਾਇਸੀ॥

The Lord sets the standards of dirty and the pure.

ਮਤੁਕੋਜਾਣੈਜਾਇਅਗੈਪਾਇਸੀ॥

Do not think that you will automatically find a place of rest



ਜੋਗੁਨਖਿੰਥਾਜੋਗੁਨਡੰਡੈਜੋਗੁਨਭਸਮਚੜਾਈਐ॥

Yoga ( divine knowledge) is not the patched coat, the walking stick or smearing the body with ashes.

ਜੋਗੁਨਮੁੰਦੀਮੂੰਡਿਮੁਡਾਇਐਜੋਗੁਨਸਿੰਙੀਵਾਈਐ॥

Yoga is not the ear rings, the shaved head or the blowing the horn.

ਅੰਜਨਮਾਹਿਨਿਰੰਜਨਿਰਹੀਐਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਇਵਪਾਈਐ॥੧॥

Remain attached to God in the world. This is the yoga way. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ॥

One; who says God God, yet does evil deed; the mind does not cleanse this way.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁਕਰਮਕਰਹਿਬਹੁਤੇਰੇਸੁਪਨੈਸੁਖੁਨਹੋਈ॥੧॥

He performs all sorts of rituals night and day but he will not find peace, even in dreams. ||1||

ਗਿਆਨੀਗੁਰਬਿਨੁਭਗਤਿਨਹੋਈ॥

O wise, you cannot worship God without guru.

ਕੋਰੈਰੰਗੁਕਦੇਨਚੜੈਜੇਲੋਚੈਸਭੁਕੋਈ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

The untreated cloth does not dye, no matter how much one wants.

Gather God’s wealth, O brother.

ਧਨੁਸੋਹਾਗਨਿਜੋਪ੍ਰਭੂਪਛਾਨੈ॥

Blessed is the soul-bride, who realizes God.

ਮਾਨੈਹੁਕਮੁਤਜੈਅਭਿਮਾਨੈ॥

She obeys God’s command and gives up ego

ਪ੍ਰਿਅਸਿਉਰਾਤੀਰਲੀਆਮਾਨੈ॥੧॥

Imbued with her beloved, she enjoys ||1||

ਸੁਨਿਸਖੀਏਪ੍ਰਭਮਿਲਣਨੀਸਾਨੀ॥

Listen, O my companions, this is the way to realize God.

ਮਨੁਤਨੁਅਰਪਿਤਜਿਲਾਜਲੋਕਾਨੀ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

Surrender your mind and body to Him; stop worrying about other`s talks. ||1||Pause||

ਸੇਵਾਥੋਰੀਮਾਗਨੁਬਹੁਤਾ॥

His service is less but his demands are more.

ਮਹਲੁਨਪਾਵੈਕਹਤੋਪਹੁਤਾ॥੧॥

He does not obtain destiny, but he says that he has.

ਬੁਰੇਕਾਮਕਉਊਠਿਖਲੋਇਆ॥

He is ready to do evil deeds.

ਨਾਮਕੀਬੇਲਾਪੈਪੈਸੋਇਆ॥੧॥

When the time to recite God’s name came; he slept in

ਘਰਮਹਿਠਾਕੁਰੁਨਦਰਿਨਆਵੈ॥

God is in you but you cannot see.

ਗਲਮਹਿਪਾਹਣੁਲੈਲਟਕਾਵੈ॥੧॥

But you hang a stone god around your neck.

ਵਿਸਰਹਿਨਾਹੀਜਿਤੁਤੂਕਬਹੂਸੋਥਾਨੁਤੇਰਾਕੇਹਾ॥

Where is the place, where I never forget you, O Lord?

ਆਠਪਹਰਜਿਤੁਤੁਧੁਧਿਆਈਨਿਰਮਲਹੋਵੈਦੇਹਾ॥੧॥

May I recite You twenty-four hours a day there, and my body becomes pure. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇਰਾਮਹਉਸੋਥਾਨੁਭਾਲਣਆਇਆ॥

O my Lord, I came searching for that place.

ਖੋਜਤਖੋਜਤਭਇਆਸਾਧਸੰਗੁਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਸਰਣਾਈਪਾਇਆ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

After searching, I found devotee’s company and sought their refuge.


ਬੇਦਕਤੇਬਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਸਭਿਸਾਸਤਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਪੜਿਆਮੁਕਤਿਨਹੋਈ॥

Reading Vedas, Quran, Simritees and Shaastras and SGGS do not obtain salvation to anyone.

ਏਕੁਅਖਰੁਜੋਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਾਪੈਤਿਸਕੀਨਿਰਮਲਸੋਈ॥੩॥

One Word that the guru-willed recites, his thinking becomes pure. ||3||

ਖਤ੍ਰੀਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਸੂਦਵੈਸਉਪਦੇਸੁਚਹੁਵਰਨਾਕਉਸਾਝਾ॥

The divine lesson of all four castes is the same.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਾਮੁਜਪੈਉਧਰੈਸੋਕਲਿਮਹਿਘਟਿਘਟਿਨਾਨਕਮਾਝਾ॥੪॥੩॥੫੦॥

The guru-willed who recites God’s name attains salvation in today’s age. God abides in everybody.

ਚਿਟੇ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥

They wear white clothes, but they are filthy and stone-hearted.

ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਚੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥

They do not say God from the mouth. They are robbed by duality.

ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਪਸੂਆ ਸੇ ਢੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

They do not realize their origin; they are like animals!

ਮੈਦੀਜੈਨਾਮਨਿਵਾਸੁਅੰਤਰਿਸਾਂਤਿਹੋਇ॥

Please, enshrine Your name in me so that I become peaceful.

ਗੁਣਗਾਵੈਨਾਨਕਦਾਸੁਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮਤਿਦੇਇ॥੮॥੩॥੫॥

May humble Nanak sing Your praises; O guru, teach me this; ||8||3||5||


ਨਾਮੈਹੀਤੇਸਭੁਕਿਛੁਹੋਆਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਨਾਮੁਨਜਾਪੈ॥

Everything is created by reciting the name. God`s name cannot be recited without the guru.

ਗੁਰਕਾਸਬਦੁਮਹਾਰਸੁਮੀਠਾਬਿਨੁਚਾਖੇਸਾਦੁਨਜਾਪੈ॥

Guru`s teaching (sabad) is very sweet. Cannot find taste without tasting.

ਕਉਡੀਬਦਲੈਜਨਮੁਗਵਾਇਆਚੀਨਸਿਨਾਹੀਆਪੈ॥

He wastes his life in exchange for a shell; he does not search his soul.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹੋਵੈਤਾਏਕੋਜਾਣੈਹਉਮੈਦੁਖੁਨਸੰਤਾਪੈ॥੧॥

The guru-willed knows only one God. Pain of ego does not bother him. ||1||

ਕਾਇਆਅੰਦਰਿਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਬਿਸਨੁਮਹੇਸਾਸਭਓਪਤਿਜਿਤੁਸੰਸਾਰਾ॥

In the body, are Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, from whom the whole world emanated?

From above stanza it appears that brahma Vishnu and shiva are in the mind, that means they are just imaginations nothing else

ਸਚੈਆਪਣਾਖੇਲੁਰਚਾਇਆਆਵਾਗਉਣੁਪਾਸਾਰਾ॥

The Lord set His play of coming and going in the world.

ਪੂਰੈਸਤਿਗੁਰਿਆਪਿਦਿਖਾਇਆਸਚਿਨਾਮਿਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ॥੭॥

The perfect guru showed that salvation attains by reciting God’s name.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀਘਰੁਖੋਜਿਆਪਾਇਆਨਾਮੁਨਿਧਾਨੁ

The fortune searched his soul and found the treasure of God’s name.

ਗੁਰਿਪੂਰੈਵੇਖਾਲਿਆਪ੍ਰਭੁਆਤਮਰਾਮੁਪਛਾਨੁ॥੪॥

The perfect guru showed me the way; I realized the supreme Lord. ||4||

ਸਭਨਾਕਾਪ੍ਰਭੁਏਕੁਹੈਦੂਜਾਅਵਰੁਨਕੋਇ॥

There is one God of all; no other.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀਮਨਿਵਸੈਤਿਤੁਘਟਿਪਰਗਟੁਹੋਇ॥੫॥

By guru’s grace, God enshrines in the mind; He is revealed in the heart

ਸੁਤਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਲਾਉ ॥

Praise the guru while asleep and recite guru when you are awake.

ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਉ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਧੋਵਾ ਪਾਉ ॥੪॥

If I meet such a guru-willed; I will wash his feet. ||4||

ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਸਜਣੁ ਲੋੜਿ ਲਹੁ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

I long for such a friend; that will unite me with my beloved.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੫॥

Meeting the true guru is meeting God. I found Him with ease. ||5||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਣ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥

Guru is the ocean of virtues of God’s name. I yearn to see Him!

ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਊ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥

Without Him, I cannot live for a moment. If I do not see Him, I will die. ||6||

ਜਿਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਣੀਐ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ

As the fish cannot survive without water;

ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਤੁ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥

Same way the saint cannot live without God. Without Lord’s name, he dies.

ਜੋਦੀਸੈਗੁਰਸਿਖੜਾਤਿਸੁਨਿਵਿਨਿਵਿਲਾਗਉਪਾਇਜੀਉ॥

If I see guru’s devotee, I humbly bow and fall at his feet.

ਆਖਾਬਿਰਥਾਜੀਅਕੀਗੁਰੁਸਜਣੁਦੇਹਿਮਿਲਾਇਜੀਉ॥

I tell him the state of my mind and beg to unite me with the guru.

ਸੋਈਦਸਿਉਪਦੇਸੜਾਮੇਰਾਮਨੁਅਨਤਨਕਾਹੂਜਾਇਜੀਉ॥

I ask him for the lesson that my mind shall not go anywhere else.

ਇਹੁਮਨੁਤੈਕੂੰਡੇਵਸਾਮੈਮਾਰਗੁਦੇਹੁਬਤਾਇਜੀਉ॥

I surrender this mind to you. Please, show me the path to God.

ਹਉਆਇਆਦੂਰਹੁਚਲਿਕੈਮੈਤਕੀਤਉਸਰਣਾਇਜੀਉ॥

I came from far away to seek Your sanctuary.

ਮੈਆਸਾਰਖੀਚਿਤਿਮਹਿਮੇਰਾਸਭੋਦੁਖੁਗਵਾਇਜੀਉ॥

I hope in my mind that you will eliminate all my sufferings.

ਇਤੁਮਾਰਗਿਚਲੇਭਾਈਅੜੇਗੁਰੁਕਹੈਸੁਕਾਰਕਮਾਇਜੀਉ॥

Walk this path O brother; do whatever guru tells you to do.

ਤਿਆਗੇਂਮਨਕੀਮਤੜੀਵਿਸਾਰੇਂਦੂਜਾਭਾਉਜੀਉ॥

Abandon the intellectual pursuits of the mind, and forget the love of duality.

ਇਉਪਾਵਹਿਹਰਿਦਰਸਾਵੜਾਨਹਲਗੈਤਤੀਵਾਉਜੀਉ॥

This way, you visualize God and nothing should stop you.

ਮਨਮੁਖਭਗਤਿਕਰਹਿਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਵਿਣੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਭਗਤਿਨਹੋਈਰਾਮ॥

The self-willed recite God without the guru. It cannot be done without the guru.

ਹਉਮੈਮਾਇਆਰੋਗਿਵਿਆਪੇਮਰਿਜਨਮਹਿਦੁਖੁਹੋਈਰਾਮ॥

They are troubled by the sickness of ego. They bear the pain of birth and death.

ਮਰਿਜਨਮਹਿਦੁਖੁਹੋਈਦੂਜੈਭਾਇਪਰਜਵਿਗੋਈਵਿਣੁਗੁਰਤਤੁਨਜਾਨਿਆ॥

They suffer the pain of birth and death deluded by duality. The reality cannot be understood without the guru.

ਭਗਤਿਵਿਹੂਣਾਸਭੁਜਗੁਭਰਮਿਆਅੰਤਿਗਇਆਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ॥

The world is deluded by duality not worshipping God and repents

ਅਨਦਿਨੁਗੁਣਗਾਵੈਨਿਤਸਾਚੇਕਥੇਅਕਥਕਹਾਣੀ॥

Night and day, she sings God’s praises; she speaks the unspoken story.

ਜੁਗਚਾਰੇਸਾਚਾਏਕੋਵਰਤੈਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਕਿਨੈਨਪਾਇਆ॥

One God abides throughout the four ages. No one realizes Him without the guru.

Lava, ਲ਼ਾਵਾ

ਹਰਿਪਹਿਲੜੀਲਾਵਪਰਵਿਰਤੀਕਰਮਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

God started the first round of the marriage ceremony by His grace.

ਬਾਣੀਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਵੇਦੁਧਰਮੁਦ੍ਰਿੜਹੁਪਾਪਤਜਾਇਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

Recite the hymns of the Vedas of Brahma and eliminate sins O Lord.

ਧਰਮੁਦ੍ਰਿੜਹੁਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਵਹੁਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਨਾਮੁਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ॥

Recite God’s name truthfully reading from scriptures.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਗੁਰੁਪੂਰਾਆਰਾਧਹੁਸਭਿਕਿਲਵਿਖਪਾਪਗਵਾਇਆ॥

Recite and worship the perfect guru and eliminate your sins and sufferings.

ਸਹਜਅਨੰਦੁਹੋਆਵਡਭਾਗੀਮਨਿਹਰਿਹਰਿਮੀਠਾਲਾਇਆ॥

The fortunate attained peace and joy reciting God’s sweet name.

ਜਨੁਕਹੈਨਾਨਕੁਲਾਵਪਹਿਲੀਆਰੰਭੁਕਾਜੁਰਚਾਇਆ॥੧॥

Servant Nanak proclaims that the first round of the marriage ceremony has begun. ||1||

ਹਰਿਦੂਜੜੀਲਾਵਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪੁਰਖੁਮਿਲਾਇਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

In the second round of marriage ceremony; the guru united me with the true spouse O Lord.

ਨਿਰਭਉਭੈਮਨੁਹੋਇਹਉਮੈਮੈਲੁਗਵਾਇਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

My mind became peaceful and the filth of ego eliminated O Lord.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁਭਉਪਾਇਆਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਇਆਹਰਿਵੇਖੈਰਾਮੁਹਦੂਰੇ॥

I became carefree reciting God’s praises and I realized God in me.

ਹਰਿਆਤਮਰਾਮੁਪਸਾਰਿਆਸੁਆਮੀਸਰਬਰਹਿਆਭਰਪੂਰੇ॥

God created the creation and he is merged in everything.

ਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਹਰਿਪ੍ਰਭੁਏਕੋਮਿਲਿਹਰਿਜਨਮੰਗਲਗਾਏ॥

God is inside out. I sing songs of joy joining God’s devotees.

ਜਨਨਾਨਕਦੂਜੀਲਾਵਚਲਾਈਅਨਹਦਸਬਦਵਜਾਏ॥੨॥

Servant Nanak proclaims; in the second round of the marriage ceremony, the infinite divine music started to play. ||2||

ਹਰਿਤੀਜੜੀਲਾਵਮਨਿਚਾਉਭਇਆਬੈਰਾਗੀਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

In the third round of the marriage ceremony my mind became detached O Lord.

ਸੰਤਜਨਾਹਰਿਮੇਲੁਹਰਿਪਾਇਆਵਡਭਾਗੀਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

Meeting God’s humble saints I the fortunate found my Lord O God.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁਹਰਿਪਾਇਆਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਇਆਮੁਖਿਬੋਲੀਹਰਿਬਾਣੀ॥

I found the pure Lord, I sing God’s praises. I recite God’s sermon.

ਸੰਤਜਨਾਵਡਭਾਗੀਪਾਇਆਹਰਿਕਥੀਐਅਕਥਕਹਾਣੀ॥

I the fortunate found the saint and I spoke God’s unspoken sermon.

ਹਿਰਦੈਹਰਿਹਰਿਹਰਿਧੁਨਿਉਪਜੀਹਰਿਜਪੀਐਮਸਤਕਿਭਾਗੁਜੀਉ॥

My mind started saying God God. I recite God due to my pre-ordained destiny.

ਜਨੁਨਾਨਕੁਬੋਲੇਤੀਜੀਲਾਵੈਹਰਿਉਪਜੈਮਨਿਬੈਰਾਗੁਜੀਉ॥੩॥

Servant Nanak proclaims the third round of the marriage ceremony; the mind is filled with divine love. ||3||

ਹਰਿਚਉਥੜੀਲਾਵਮਨਿਸਹਜੁਭਇਆਹਰਿਪਾਇਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

In the fourth round of the marriage ceremony, my mind became peaceful; I found my Lord O God;

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਿਲਿਆਸੁਭਾਇਹਰਿਮਨਿਤਨਿਮੀਠਾਲਾਇਆਬਲਿਰਾਮਜੀਉ॥

I found the guru-willed intuitively. He feels sweet to my mind and body O God;

ਹਰਿਮੀਠਾਲਾਇਆਮੇਰੇਪ੍ਰਭਭਾਇਆਅਨਦਿਨੁਹਰਿਲਿਵਲਾਈ॥

God`s sweetness pleases God. I am attuned to God forever.

ਮਨਚਿੰਦਿਆਫਲੁਪਾਇਆਸੁਆਮੀਹਰਿਨਾਮਿਵਜੀਵਾਧਾਈ॥

I obtained fruit of my choice O Lord; I received the blessing reciting God`s name.

ਹਰਿਪ੍ਰਭਿਠਾਕੁਰਿਕਾਜੁਰਚਾਇਆਧਨਹਿਰਦੈਨਾਮਿਵਿਗਾਸੀ॥

God completed the marriage ceremony; the soul-bride enjoys God’s name in the mind.

ਜਨੁਨਾਨਕੁਬੋਲੇਚਉਥੀਲਾਵੈਹਰਿਪਾਇਆਪ੍ਰਭੁਅਵਿਨਾਸੀ॥੪॥੨॥

ਐਸਾਗੁਰੁਵਡਭਾਗੀਪਾਈਐਜਿਤੁਮਿਲਿਐਪ੍ਰਭੁਜਾਪੈਰਾਮ॥

The fortunate find such a guru; meeting Him it appears as if He is God.

ਜਨਮਜਨਮਕੇਕਿਲਵਿਖਉਤਰਹਿਹਰਿਸੰਤਧੂੜੀਨਿਤਨਾਪੈਰਾਮ॥

Bathing in the dust of the saints; sins of many lifes vanish O Lord.

ਹਰਿਧੂੜੀਨਾਈਐਪ੍ਰਭੂਧਿਆਈਐਬਾਹੁੜਿਜੋਨਿਨਆਈਐ॥

Bathe in God`s dust and recite God, you shall not be born again.

ਗੁਰਚਰਣੀਲਾਗੇਭ੍ਰਮਭਉਭਾਗੇਮਨਿਚਿੰਦਿਆਫਲੁਪਾਈਐ॥

Touching guru’s feet the fear of doubt goes away and receive the reward of your choice.

ਹਰਿਗੁਣਨਿਤਗਾਏਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਏਫਿਰਿਸੋਗੁਨਾਹੀਸੰਤਾਪੈ॥

Sing God’s praises. Reciting His name all the time the sorrow and worry do not bother again.

ਨਾਨਕਸੋਪ੍ਰਭੁਜੀਅਕਾਦਾਤਾਪੂਰਾਜਿਸੁਪਰਤਾਪੈ॥੨॥

O Nanak, God is the giver of all souls; His power is absolute. ||2||

ਚੋਰਾ ਜਾਰਾ ਰੰਡੀਆ ਕੁਟਣੀਆ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ॥ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕੀ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣੁ॥

Thieves, adulterers, prostitutes and pimps, make friendships with faithless, and eat faithlessly.

ਸਿਫਤੀਸਾਰਨਜਾਣਨੀਸਦਾਵਸੈਸੈਤਾਨੁ॥

They do not know the value of God’s praises, and live with the devil.

ਗਦਹੁਚੰਦਨਿਖਉਲੀਐਭੀਸਾਹੂਸਿਉਪਾਣੁ॥

If you put sandalwood on the forehead of a donkey, he still loves to roll in the dirt.

ਨਾਨਕਕੂੜੈਕਤਿਐਕੂੜਾਤਣੀਐਤਾਣੁ॥

O Nanak, if you spin false then you weave false.

ਕੂੜਾਕਪੜੁਕਛੀਐਕੂੜਾਪੈਨਣੁਮਾਣੁ॥੧॥

If you think false. Then your clothes and honor is also false. ||1||

ਦੀਵਾਬਲੈਅੰਧੇਰਾਜਾਇ॥

When the lamp is lit, the darkness disappears.

ਬੇਦਪਾਠਮਤਿਪਾਪਾਖਾਇ॥

Reading the scriptures, sinful thinking is destroyed.

ਉਗਵੈਸੂਰੁਨਜਾਪੈਚੰਦੁ॥

When the sun rises, the moon is not visible.

ਜਹਗਿਆਨਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁਅਗਿਆਨੁਮਿਟੰਤੁ॥

Wherever spiritual wisdom appears, ignorance disappears.

ਬੇਦਪਾਠਸੰਸਾਰਕੀਕਾਰ॥

Reading the scriptures (do path) is the ritual of the world.

ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਪੰਡਿਤਕਰਹਿਬੀਚਾਰ॥

The scholars read and contemplate them.

ਬਿਨੁਬੂਝੇਸਭਹੋਇਖੁਆਰ॥

Without understanding, all are ruined.

ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਉਤਰਸਿਪਾਰਿ॥੧॥

ਖਤ੍ਰੀਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁਸੂਦੁਵੈਸੁਕੋਜਾਪੈਹਰਿਮੰਤ੍ਰੁਜਪੈਨੀ॥

Anyone, from any class - Kh’shaatriya, Brahman, Soodra or Vaishya - can say the mantra to recite God.

ਗੁਰੁਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਕਰਿਪੂਜਹੁਨਿਤਸੇਵਹੁਦਿਨਸੁਸਭਰੈਨੀ॥੧॥

Worship the guru as the supreme Lord; serve Him day and night. ||1||

ਹਰਿਜਨਦੇਖਹੁਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਨੈਨੀ॥

O humble servants of the Lord, see the true guru with your eyes.

ਜੋਇਛਹੁਸੋਈਫਲੁਪਾਵਹੁਹਰਿਬੋਲਹੁਗੁਰਮਤਿਬੈਨੀ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

Obtain the reward of your choice by saying God through guru’s teachings. ||1||Pause||

ਊਚਅਪਾਰਬੇਅੰਤਸੁਆਮੀਕਉਣੁਜਾਣੈਗੁਣਤੇਰੇ॥

O my lofty, incomparable and infinite Lord, who can know Your virtues?

ਗਾਵਤੇਉਧਰਹਿਸੁਣਤੇਉਧਰਹਿਬਿਨਸਹਿਪਾਪਘਨੇਰੇ॥

Those who sing and those who listen to your praises are saved and all sins are erased.

ਪਸੂਪਰੇਤਮੁਗਧਕਉਤਾਰੇਪਾਹਨਪਾਰਿਉਤਾਰੈ॥

You save the beasts, demons and fools, and even stones are carried across.

ਨਾਨਕਦਾਸਤੇਰੀਸਰਣਾਈਸਦਾਸਦਾਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ॥੪॥੧॥੪॥

Servant Nanak seeks Your refuge; he praises You forever. ||4||1||4||

The fortunate find the perfect guru

ਮਿਲਿਸਾਧੂਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਈਐ॥੧॥

Meeting the devotees, recite God’s name. ||1||

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਪ੍ਰਭਤੇਰੀਸਰਨਾ॥

O supreme Lord, I seek Your sanctuary.

ਕਿਲਬਿਖਕਾਟੈਭਜੁਗੁਰਕੇਚਰਨਾ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

Meditating on guru’s feet, sinful acts are erased. ||1||Pause||

ਅਵਰਿਕਰਮਸਭਿਲੋਕਾਚਾਰ॥

All other rituals are just worldly affairs;

ਮਿਲਿਸਾਧੂਸੰਗਿਹੋਇਉਧਾਰ॥੨॥

Joining the company of devotees, one obtains salvation. ||2||

ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿਸਾਸਤਬੇਦਬੀਚਾਰੇ॥

One may contemplate the Simritees, Shaastras and Vedas (all scriptures)

ਜਪੀਐਨਾਮੁਜਿਤੁਪਾਰਿਉਤਾਰੇ॥੩॥

But only reciting God’s name attains salvation. ||3||

ਜਨਨਾਨਕਕਉਪ੍ਰਭਕਿਰਪਾਕਰੀਐ॥

Be kind to servant Nanak, O God,

ਸਾਧੂਧੂਰਿਮਿਲੈਨਿਸਤਰੀਐ॥੪॥੬॥੧੧॥

Bless him with the dust of the feet of devotees, that he may obtain salvation

ਮਨਮਹਿਸਿੰਚਹੁਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮ॥

Water your mind with the name of the Lord.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁਕੀਰਤਨੁਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਮ॥੧॥

Night and day, sing the praises of the Lord. ||1||

ਐਸੀਪ੍ਰੀਤਿਕਰਹੁਮਨਮੇਰੇ॥

Be in such love, O my mind;

ਆਠਪਹਰਪ੍ਰਭਜਾਨਹੁਨੇਰੇ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

Realize God close by twenty-four hours a day; ||1||Pause||

ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਜਾਕੇਨਿਰਮਲਭਾਗ॥

Says Nanak, he who is fortunalte

ਹਰਿਚਰਨੀਤਾਕਾਮਨੁਲਾਗ॥੨॥੭॥੨੫॥

His mind is attached to Lord’s feet

I praise those who self surrender and obey guru’s will. ||2||

ਜਿਨਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪਿਆਰਾਦੇਖਿਆਤਿਨਕਉਹਉਵਾਰੀ॥

I admire those who met the beloved guru.

ਜਿਨਗੁਰਕੀਕੀਤੀਚਾਕਰੀਤਿਨਸਦਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ॥੩॥

I am forever a sacrifice to those who serve the guru. ||3||

ਹਰਿਹਰਿਤੇਰਾਨਾਮੁਹੈਦੁਖਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ॥

Your name, O Lord, is the destroyer of sufferings.

ਗੁਰਸੇਵਾਤੇਪਾਈਐਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ॥੪॥

The guru-willed attain salvation by serving the guru. ||4||

ਜੋਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਧਿਆਇਦੇਤੇਜਨਪਰਵਾਨਾ॥

Those who recite God’s name are accepted by God.

ਤਿਨਵਿਟਹੁਨਾਨਕੁਵਾਰਿਆਸਦਾਸਦਾਕੁਰਬਾਨਾ॥੫॥

Nanak is a sacrifice to them forever and owes them. ||5||

ਸਾਹਰਿਤੇਰੀਉਸਤਤਿਹੈਜੋਹਰਿਪ੍ਰਭਭਾਵੈ॥

Praise, that pleases God is His true praise.

ਜੋਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਿਆਰਾਸੇਵਦੇਤਿਨਹਰਿਫਲੁਪਾਵੈ॥੬॥

The guru-willed who serve the beloved God; reap the reward. ||6||

ਜਿਨਾਹਰਿਸੇਤੀਪਿਰਹੜੀਤਿਨਾਜੀਅਪ੍ਰਭਨਾਲੇ॥

Those who love God are attached to God devotionally.

ਓਇਜਪਿਜਪਿਪਿਆਰਾਜੀਵਦੇਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਸਮਾਲੇ॥੭॥

They recite God’s name and live by it. ||7||

ਜਿਨਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਿਆਰਾਸੇਵਿਆਤਿਨਕਉਘੁਮਿਜਾਇਆ॥

I worship those guru-willed who worship the beloved God.

ਓਇਆਪਿਛੁਟੇਪਰਵਾਰਸਿਉਸਭੁਜਗਤੁਛਡਾਇਆ॥੮॥

They attain salvation and with their family and the whole world. ||8||

ਗੁਰਿਪਿਆਰੈਹਰਿਸੇਵਿਆਗੁਰੁਧੰਨੁਗੁਰੁਧੰਨੋ

My guru serves the Lord with love. I admire the guru.

ਗੁਰਿਹਰਿਮਾਰਗੁਦਸਿਆਗੁਰਪੁੰਨੁਵਡਪੁੰਨੋ॥੯॥

The guru showed me God’s path; the guru did the greatest service. ||9||

ਮਨਤਨਰਸਨਾਹਰਿਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ॥

With my mind, body and tongue, I remember the Lord.

ਭਏਅਨੰਦਾਮਿਟੇਅੰਦੇਸੇਸਰਬਸੂਖਮੋਕਉਗੁਰਿਦੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

I am happy, my anxieties are dispelled; by the guru

has blessed me with total peace. ||1||Pause||

ਇਆਨਪਤੇਸਭਭਈਸਿਆਨਪਪ੍ਰਭੁਮੇਰਾਦਾਨਾਬੀਨਾ॥

By God’s grace I the ignorant became wise.

ਹਾਥਦੇਇਰਾਖੈਅਪਨੇਕਉਕਾਹੂਨਕਰਤੇਕਛੁਖੀਨਾ॥੧॥

Giving His Hand, He saved me, now no one can harm me. ||1||

ਬਲਿਜਾਵਉਦਰਸਨਸਾਧੂਕੈਜਿਹਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਲੀਨਾ॥

I praise seeing God’s devotees; I recite God’s name by his grace.

ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਠਾਕੁਰਭਾਰੋਸੈਕਹੂਨਮਾਨਿਓਮਨਿਛੀਨਾ॥੨॥੧੧॥੯੭॥

Says Nanak, believing in God I do not believe anyone else at all. ||2||11||97||

ਪਿੰਗੁਲਪਰਬਤਪਾਰਿਪਰੇਖਲਚਤੁਰਬਕੀਤਾ

The cripple crosses over the mountain the fool becomes wise.

ਅੰਧੁਲੇਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਸੂਝਿਆਗੁਰਭੇਟਿਪੁਨੀਤਾ॥੧॥

The blind can see the universe by surrendering to the sacred guru. ||1||

ਮਹਿਮਾਸਾਧੂਸੰਗਕੀਸੁਨਹੁਮੇਰੇਮੀਤਾ॥

This is the glory of company of devotees; listen, O my friends.

ਮੈਲੁਖੋਈਕੋਟਿਅਘਹਰੇਨਿਰਮਲਭਏਚੀਤਾ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

Filth is washed away, millions of sins are eliminated

and the mind becomes pure. ||1||Pause||

ਐਸੀਭਗਤਿਗੋਵਿੰਦਕੀਕੀਟਿਹਸਤੀਜੀਤਾ॥

Such is the worship of the Lord of the universe; an ant can defeat the elephant.

ਜੋਜੋਕੀਨੋਆਪਨੋਤਿਸੁਅਭੈਦਾਨੁਦੀਤਾ॥੨॥

Whoever the Lord makes His own, is blessed with eternity. ||2||

ਜਬਭਗਤਿਕਰਹਿਸੰਤਮੰਡਲੀਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਮਿਲਿਹਰਿਗਾਵਉ॥

When saint’s group worships God; I join them and sing God’s praises.

ਕਰਉਨਮਸਕਾਰਭਗਤਜਨਧੂਰਿਮੁਖਿਲਾਵਉ॥੩॥

I bow in respect to God’s devotees and apply the dust of their feet to my face. ||3||

ਊਠਤਬੈਠਤਜਪਉਨਾਮੁਇਹੁਕਰਮੁਕਮਾਵਉ

Sitting and standing I recite God’s name. This is my work!

ਨਾਨਕਕੀਪ੍ਰਭਬੇਨਤੀਹਰਿਸਰਨਿਸਮਾਵਉ॥੪॥੨੧॥੫੧॥

This is Nanak’s prayer to God that he may merge in Lord’s sanctuary

ਐਸੀਕਿਰਪਾਮੋਹਿਕਰਹੁ॥

Bless me with such kindness O Lord;

ਸੰਤਹਚਰਣਹਮਾਰੋਮਾਥਾਨੈਨਦਰਸੁਤਨਿਧੂਰਿਪਰਹੁ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

May I see the saint and put my head at his feet and body in his dust. ||1||Pause||

ਗੁਰਕੋਸਬਦੁਮੇਰੈਹੀਅਰੈਬਾਸੈਹਰਿਨਾਮਾਮਨਸੰਗਿਧਰਹੁ॥

May I enshrine God’s name in my mind through guru’s teachings.

ਤਸਕਰਪੰਚਨਿਵਾਰਹੁਠਾਕੁਰਸਗਲੋਭਰਮਾਹੋਮਿਜਰਹੁ॥੧॥

May I scare the five thieves and burn away all doubts O God;
