ਭੈਰਉ ਭੂਤ ਸੀਤਲਾ ਧਾਵੈ॥
Saint Bhairau, use to say that he will eliminate ghosts and chickenpox;
ਖਰ ਬਾਹਨੁ ਉਹੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਉਡਾਵੈ॥੧॥
Riding a donkey, he used to blow dust around
ਹਉ ਤਉ ਏਕੁ ਰਮਈਆ ਲੈਹਉ॥
I only recite the name of one God
ਆਨ ਦੇਵ ਬਦਲਾਵਨਿ ਦੈਹਉ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
I gave up all other gods in exchange for Him. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਵਸਿਵਕਰਤੇਜੋਨਰੁਧਿਆਵੈ॥
That man who says Shiva, Shiva;
ਬਰਦ ਚਢੇ ਡਉਰੂ ਢਮਕਾਵੈ॥੨॥
Riding a bull he plays a tambourine. ||2||
ਮਹਾ ਮਾਈ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੈ॥
One who worships the great goddess?
ਨਰ ਸੈ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਉਤਰੈ॥੩॥
Will become a woman from a man; ||3||

ਪਾਂਡੇ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਰਾਮਚੰਦੁ ਸੋ ਭੀ ਆਵਤੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਥਾ ॥
O scholar, I saw your Raam Chander coming too
ਰਾਵਨ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਰਬਰ ਹੋਈਘਰ ਕੀ ਜੋਇ ਗਵਾਈ ਥੀ॥੩॥
He fought a war against Raawan and lost his wife. ||3||
ਹਿੰਦੂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਤੁਰਕੂ ਕਾਣਾ॥
The Hindu is blind; Muslim has only one eye.
ਦੁਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਿਆਣਾ॥
The spiritual person is wiser than both;
ਹਿੰਦੂ ਪੂਜੈ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਮਸੀਤਿ॥
The Hindu worships at the temple, the Muslim at the mosque.
ਨਾਮੇਸੋਈਸੇਵਿਆਜਹਦੇਹੁਰਾਨਮਸੀਤਿ॥੪॥੩॥੭॥
Naam Dev serves that Lord, who has no temple or mosque. ||4||3||7||

ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਪੜਤਾ ਟੀਕਾ ਸਹਿਤ ॥
You read the scriptures including translation and explanation.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਹਤ ॥
But you do not miss God devotionally and intently.
ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਲੋਕ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ॥
You preach others.
ਅਪਨਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
But you do not practice what you preach. ||1||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ॥
O scholar; contemplate the Vedas.
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Eradicate anger from your mind, O scholar; ||1||Pause||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਇ॥
Take support of the guru the God.
ਅਵਰ ਆਸਾ ਸਭ ਲਾਹਿ॥
Give up all other hopes and desires
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਾਗੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ॥
Beg for the treasure of the name of God
ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ॥੩॥
Then you shall be honored in the court of the Lord. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਜਪਿ ਮੰਤੁ॥
Recite the lesson given by the guru to recite.
ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਰ ਤਤੁ॥
This is the essence of God’s worship.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ॥
When the guru becomes kind;
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਹਾਲ॥੪॥੨੮॥੩੯॥
Says Nanak; the servant attains contentment.

ਗੁਰਕੀਕੀਰਤਿਜਪੀਐਹਰਿਨਾਉ॥
Serve the guru and recite God’s name.
ਗੁਰਕੀਭਗਤਿਸਦਾਗੁਣਗਾਉ॥
Worship the guru and sing God’s praises all the time
ਗੁਰਕੀਸੁਰਤਿਨਿਕਟਿਕਰਿਜਾਨੁ॥
See God close by in your mind.
ਗੁਰਕਾਸਬਦੁਸਤਿਕਰਿਮਾਨੁ॥੨॥
Accept guru’s teachings as true ||2||
ਗੁਰਬਚਨੀਸਮਸਰਿਸੁਖਦੂਖ॥
Through guru’s teachings, see happiness and sorrow the same.
ਕਦੇਨਬਿਆਪੈਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਭੂਖ॥
Hunger and thirst shall never bother you.
ਮਨਿਸੰਤੋਖੁਸਬਦਿਗੁਰਰਾਜੇ॥
Mind becomes content and satisfied through guru’s teachings.
ਜਪਿਗੋਬਿੰਦੁਪੜਦੇਸਭਿਕਾਜੇ॥੩॥
Recite God; it will cover your sins. ||3||
ਗੁਰੁਪਰਮੇਸਰੁਗੁਰੁਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ॥
Guru is the supreme Lord the Lord of the universe.
ਗੁਰੁਦਾਤਾਦਇਆਲਬਖਸਿੰਦੁ॥
The guru is the great giver, kind and forgiving.
ਗੁਰਚਰਨੀਜਾਕਾਮਨੁਲਾਗਾ॥
One whose mind is attached to guru’s feet respectfully
ਨਾਨਕਦਾਸਤਿਸੁਪੂਰਨਭਾਗਾ॥੪॥੩੬॥੪੭॥
Says servant Nanak; he is very lucky. ||4||36||47||

ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਲੇਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
He reads and explains the scriptures (granth sahib) to others.
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
Going to sacred shrines does not eliminate th sickness
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
Without reciting God’s name; how can he find happiness? ||4||
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਿਵੈ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
He tries but his lust does not go away.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਨਰਕੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
His mind wavers, he goes to hell.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧੋ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
He suffers punishment at the place of death.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥
Without God’s name; his soul burns. ||5||
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
Many mystics, seekers, sages and demy-gods;
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹਿ ਭੇਵਾ ॥
They practice stubbornness, they cannot find the mystery.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਗਹਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
One who contemplates guru’s teachings and serves him.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
His mind and body become pure and eliminates ego. ||6||

ਆਨੰਦੁਆਨੰਦੁਸਭੁਕੋਕਹੈਆਨੰਦੁਗੁਰੂਤੇਜਾਣਿਆ॥
Everyone talks of happiness but the happiness is realized through the guru.
ਜਾਣਿਆਆਨੰਦੁਸਦਾਗੁਰਤੇਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਕਰੇਪਿਆਰਿਆ॥
Eternal happiness is realized through the guru by God’s grace.
ਕਰਿਕਿਰਪਾਕਿਲਵਿਖਕਟੇਗਿਆਨਅੰਜਨੁਸਾਰਿਆ॥
The sins are eliminated by His grace through the medicine of divine wisdom.
ਅੰਦਰਹੁਜਿਨਕਾਮੋਹੁਤੁਟਾਤਿਨਕਾਸਬਦੁਸਚੈਸਵਾਰਿਆ॥
Those who eradicate worldly attachment from
their mind are saved through guru’s teachings.
ਕਹੈਨਾਨਕੁਏਹੁਅਨੰਦੁਹੈਆਨੰਦੁਗੁਰਤੇਜਾਣਿਆ॥੭॥
Says Nanak, this is happiness that is obtained from the guru. ||7||

ਆਵਹੁਸੰਤਪਿਆਰਿਹੋਅਕਥਕੀਕਰਹਕਹਾਣੀ॥
Come O beloved saints, let us speak the unspoken story of the Lord.
ਕਰਹਕਹਾਣੀਅਕਥਕੇਰੀਕਿਤੁਦੁਆਰੈਪਾਈਐ॥
Let us talk the unspoken story that tells how to find God;
ਤਨੁਮਨੁਧਨੁਸਭੁਸਉਪਿਗੁਰਕਉਹੁਕਮਿਮੰਨਿਐਪਾਈਐ॥
Surrender body, mind and wealth to the guru; obey his command and realize God.
ਹੁਕਮੁਮੰਨਿਹੁਗੁਰੂਕੇਰਾਗਾਵਹੁਸਚੀਬਾਣੀ॥
Obey guru’s command, and sing the true word of His sermon.
ਕਹੈਨਾਨਕੁਸੁਣਹੁਸੰਤਹੁਕਥਿਹੁਅਕਥਕਹਾਣੀ॥੯॥
Says Nanak, listen, O saints, this is how the untold story is told ||9||

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਾਪ ਬੀਚਾਰਦੇ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
The scriptures contemplate sin and sacred, but do not know the reality.
ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਤੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
The ignorant do not know the reality without the guru;
ਤਿਹੀ ਗੁਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਸੁਤਾ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥
The world is asleep in the three worldly qualities
in doubt; it passes the night sleeping.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਜਾਗੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
Those who enshrine God in the mind wake up by
guru’s grace and speak sacred words.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੋ ਤਤੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਾਗਤ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੨੭॥
Says Nanak, those; who love God know the
reality and spend the night life awake. ||27||

ਜੈਸੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
As is the fire in the womb, so is worldly wealth outside.
ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਭ ਇਕੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਕਰਤੈ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
The fire and worldly wealth is the same. God sets this play;
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਰਿ ਭਲਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
According to His will, the child is born, and the family is pleased.
ਲਿਵ ਛੁੜਕੀ ਲਗੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਮਰੁ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥
God’s love wears off; the child becomes greedy; the worldly wealth runs its course.
ਏਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
This is the worldly wealth that makes the child forget
God, worldly attachment and the love of duality wells up.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਤਿਨੀ ਵਿਚੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨੯॥
Says Nanak, those attuned to God by guru’s grace,
realize God even surrounded by worldly wealth. ||29

]ਸਾਜਨੜਾਮੇਰਾਸਾਜਨੜਾਨਿਕਟਿਖਲੋਇਅੜਾਮੇਰਾਸਾਜਨੜਾ॥
Friend, my friend - standing near me is my friend!
ਜਾਨੀਅੜਾਹਰਿਜਾਨੀਅੜਾਨੈਣਅਲੋਇਅੜਾਹਰਿਜਾਨੀਅੜਾ॥
I see my beloved Lord with my eyes.
ਨੈਣਅਲੋਇਆਘਟਿਘਟਿਸੋਇਆਅਤਿਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਪ੍ਰਿਅਗੂੜਾ॥
I see God with my eyes, he lives in everbody. His nectar tastes sweet.
ਨਾਲਿਹੋਵੰਦਾਲਹਿਨਸਕੰਦਾਸੁਆਉਨਜਾਣੈਮੂੜਾ॥
He is with all but cannot be found; the fool does not know His taste.
ਮਾਇਆਮਦਿਮਾਤਾਹੋਛੀਬਾਤਾਮਿਲਣੁਨਜਾਈਭਰਮਧੜਾ॥
Intoxicated with worldly wealth; talks silly, he cannot realize God due to doubt.
ਕਹੁਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਬਿਨੁਨਾਹੀਸੂਝੈਹਰਿਸਾਜਨੁਸਭਕੈਨਿਕਟਿਖੜਾ॥੧॥
Says Nanak, without the guru, God cannot
be realized though he stands close to all. ||1||

ਕਵਨੁਸੁਗੁਪਤਾਕਵਨੁਸੁਮੁਕਤਾ॥
“Who is hidden? Who is liberated?
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਜੁਗਤਾ॥
Who is united inside out?
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਆਵੈਕਵਨੁਸੁਜਾਇ॥
Who comes, who goes?
ਕਵਨੁਸੁਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿਰਹਿਆਸਮਾਇ॥੧੨॥
Who is permeating and pervading the universe?”||12||
ਘਟਿਘਟਿਗੁਪਤਾਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮੁਕਤਾ॥
He is hidden in each and every heart. The guru-willed is liberated.
ਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਸਬਦਿਸੁਜੁਗਤਾ॥
He is realized inside as well outside through guru’s teachings.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿਬਿਨਸੈਆਵੈਜਾਇ॥
The self-willed perishes and keeps coming and goig.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਾਚਿਸਮਾਇ॥੧੩॥
O Nanak, the guru-willed merges in truth. ||13||
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਬਾਧਾਸਰਪਨਿਖਾਧਾ॥
“How is one bound and consumed by worldly wealth?
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਖੋਇਆਕਿਉਕਰਿਲਾਧਾ॥
How does one lose, how does one gain?
ਕਿਉਕਰਿਨਿਰਮਲੁਕਿਉਕਰਿਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ॥
How one becomes pure (enlightened)? How is one in the dark?
ਇਹੁਤਤੁਬੀਚਾਰੈਸੁਗੁਰੂਹਮਾਰਾ॥੧੪॥
One who understands this reality is my guru.”||14||
ਦੁਰਮਤਿਬਾਧਾਸਰਪਨਿਖਾਧਾ॥
Engrossed by ill deeds is consumed by worldly wealth.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿਖੋਇਆਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਲਾਧਾ॥
The self-willed loses the guru-willed gains.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮਿਲੈਅੰਧੇਰਾਜਾਇ॥
Meeting the guru, darkness is eliminated.
ਨਾਨਕਹਉਮੈਮੇਟਿਸਮਾਇ॥੧੫॥
O Nanak, eradicating ego one merges in the Lord. ||15||
ਸੁੰਨਨਿਰੰਤਰਿਦੀਜੈਬੰਧੁ॥
Focus your mind continuously on One God.
ਉਡੈਨਹੰਸਾਪੜੈਨਕੰਧੁ॥
The soul-swan does not fly away and the body-wall does not collapse.
ਸਹਜਗੁਫਾਘਰੁਜਾਣੈਸਾਚਾ॥
Then, one realizes God in his peaceful body cave.
ਨਾਨਕਸਾਚੇਭਾਵੈਸਾਚਾ॥੧੬॥
O Nanak, truth pleases the true Lord. ||16||

ਨਾਮੇਰਾਤੇਹਉਮੈਜਾਇ॥
Attuned to God’s name eliminates ego.
ਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਸਚਿਰਹੇਸਮਾਇ॥
Attuned to God’s name merge in truth;
ਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਬੀਚਾਰੁ॥
Attuned to God’s name, contemplate the way to salvation.
ਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਪਾਵਹਿਮੋਖਦੁਆਰੁ॥
Attuned to God’s name attain salvation.
ਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਸੋਝੀਹੋਇ॥
Attuned to God’s name, one understands the universe.
ਨਾਨਕਨਾਮਿਰਤੇਸਦਾਸੁਖੁਹੋਇ॥੩੨॥
O Nanak, attuned to God’s name attains eternal peace. ||32||

ਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਭਰਮੈਆਵੈਜਾਇ॥
Without the guru, one wanders in coming and going.
ਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਘਾਲਨਪਵਈਥਾਇ॥
Without the guru, one’s work is not completed.
ਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਮਨੂਆਅਤਿਡੋਲਾਇ॥
Without the guru, the mind is completely fickle
ਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਨਹੀਬਿਖੁਖਾਇ॥
Without the guru, one is unsatisfied, and eats poison.
ਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਬਿਸੀਅਰੁਡਸੈਮਰਿਵਾਟ॥
Without the guru, one is stung by the poisonous snake and dies on the way.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਬਿਨੁਘਾਟੇਘਾਟ॥੩੮॥
O Nanak without the guru, all is a loss. ||38||

ਸੁੰਨੋ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
“Everyone speaks of the absolute Lord.
ਅਨਹਤਸੁੰਨੁਕਹਾਤੇਹੋਈ॥
Where did the infinite God come from?
ਅਨਹਤਸੁੰਨਿਰਤੇਸੇਕੈਸੇ॥
How do those dyed by the infinite God look like?
ਜਿਸਤੇਉਪਜੇਤਿਸਹੀਜੈਸੇ॥
They are like the Lord, from whom they originated.
ਓਇਜਨਮਿਨਮਰਹਿਨਆਵਹਿਜਾਹਿ॥
They are not born, they do not die; they do not come or go.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਨੁਸਮਝਾਹਿ॥੫੨॥
O Nanak, the guru-willed consoles with his mind. ||52||

ਕਿਤੁਕਿਤੁਬਿਧਿਜਗੁਉਪਜੈਪੁਰਖਾਕਿਤੁਕਿਤੁਦੁਖਿਬਿਨਸਿਜਾਈ॥
How the world is created and how the pain is eliminated?
ਹਉਮੈਵਿਚਿਜਗੁਉਪਜੈਪੁਰਖਾਨਾਮਿਵਿਸਰਿਐਦੁਖੁਪਾਈ॥
In ego the world was created, O man; forgetting God’s name suffers pain.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹੋਵੈਸੁਗਿਆਨੁਤਤੁਬੀਚਾਰੈਹਉਮੈਸਬਦਿਜਲਾਏ॥
The guru-willed contemplates divine wisdom and the ego goes away.
ਤਨੁਮਨੁਨਿਰਮਲੁਨਿਰਮਲਬਾਣੀਸਾਚੈਰਹੈਸਮਾਏ॥
His body and mind become pure through sermon and merges with true Lord.
ਨਾਮੇਨਾਮਿਰਹੈਬੈਰਾਗੀਸਾਚੁਰਖਿਆਉਰਿਧਾਰੇ॥
Through God’s name they remain detached enshrining God in the mind.
ਨਾਨਕਬਿਨੁਨਾਵੈਜੋਗੁਕਦੇਨਹੋਵੈਦੇਖਹੁਰਿਦੈਬੀਚਾਰੇ॥੬੮॥
O Nanak, without God’s Name, Yoga is never attained; think and see it;

ਮਨਮੁਖੁਦੁਖਕਾਖੇਤੁਹੈਦੁਖੁਬੀਜੇਦੁਖੁਖਾਇ
The self-willed is the land of pain. He sows pain and suffers pain.
ਦੁਖਵਿਚਿਜੰਮੈਦੁਖਿਮਰੈਹਉਮੈਕਰਤਵਿਹਾਇ
He is born in pain, dies in pain and spends life in ego.
ਆਵਣੁਜਾਣੁਨਸੁਝਈਅੰਧਾਅੰਧੁਕਮਾਇ॥
He does not understand the purpose coming and going; the blind acts blindly.
ਜੋਦੇਵੈਤਿਸੈਨਜਾਣਈਦਿਤੇਕਉਲਪਟਾਇ॥
He does not realize the giver, but he is attached to what is given.
ਨਾਨਕਪੂਰਬਿਲਿਖਿਆਕਮਾਵਣਾਅਵਰੁਨਕਰਣਾਜਾਇ॥੨॥
O Nanak, he acts according to his pre-ordained destiny,

ਕਿਉਕਰਿਇਹੁਮਨੁਮਾਰੀਐਕਿਉਕਰਿਮਿਰਤਕੁਹੋਇ॥
How can this mind be conquered? How can it die or become humble?
ਕਹਿਆਸਬਦੁਨਮਾਨਈਹਉਮੈਛਡੈਨਕੋਇ
It does not listen to guru’s teachings and does not give up ego.
ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀਹਉਮੈਛੁਟੈਜੀਵਨਮੁਕਤੁਸੋਹੋਇ॥
By guru’s grace, ego is eradicated, then one attains salvation.
ਨਾਨਕਜਿਸਨੋਬਖਸੇਤਿਸੁਮਿਲੈਤਿਸੁਬਿਘਨੁਨਲਾਗੈਕੋਇ॥੨॥
O Nanak, whom he blesses, obtains it; no obstacles block his way. ||2||

ਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਸੇਵੇਸਾਂਤਿਨਆਵਈਦੂਜੀਨਾਹੀਜਾਇ॥
Without serving the guru, peace does not well up; there is no other such place.
ਜੇਬਹੁਤੇਰਾਲੋਚੀਐਵਿਣੁਕਰਮਾਪਾਇਆਨਜਾਇ॥
No matter how much one wants; cannot obtain anything without luck?
ਅੰਤਰਿਲੋਭੁਵਿਕਾਰੁਹੈਦੂਜੈਭਾਇਖੁਆਇ॥
Those filled with greed and other useless ideas
in the mind are ruined by duality.
ਤਿਨਜੰਮਣੁਮਰਣੁਨਚੁਕਈਹਉਮੈਵਿਚਿਦੁਖੁਪਾਇ॥
The cycle of birth and death does not end; they suffer in ego.
ਜਿਨੀਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਿਉਚਿਤੁਲਾਇਆਸੋਖਾਲੀਕੋਈਨਾਹਿ॥
Those who focus their mind to the guru do not go empty;
ਤਿਨਜਮਕੀਤਲਬਨਹੋਵਈਨਾਓਇਦੁਖਸਹਾਹਿ॥
They have no worry of the devil of death; they do not suffer.
ਨਾਨਕਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਉਬਰੇਸਚੈਸਬਦਿਸਮਾਹਿ॥੩॥
O Nanak, the guru-willed rise and merge with God through guru’s teachings. ||3||

ਹਰਿਕਾਮੰਦਰੁਆਖੀਐਕਾਇਆਕੋਟੁਗੜੁ॥
This body fortress is the place of worship of God.
ਅੰਦਰਿਲਾਲਜਵੇਹਰੀਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਪੜੁ
The rubies and gems are inside O guru-willed recite God’s name;
ਹਰਿਕਾਮੰਦਰੁਸਰੀਰੁਅਤਿਸੋਹਣਾਹਰਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁਦਿੜੁ॥
The body is God’s temple and is beautiful; recite God’s name O mortal.
ਮਨਮੁਖਆਪਿਖੁਆਇਅਨੁਮਾਇਆਮੋਹਨਿਤਕੜੁ॥
The self-willed ruin themselves; they are boiled in worldly wealth forever.
ਸਭਨਾਸਾਹਿਬੁਏਕੁਹੈਪੂਰੈਭਾਗਿਪਾਇਆਜਾਈ॥੧੧॥
One God is the master of all; He is realized with good luck. ||11||

Where we realize God is the real place of worship;
ਮਾਨਸਦੇਹਗੁਰਬਚਨੀਪਾਇਆਸਭੁਆਤਮਰਾਮੁਪਛਾਤਾ॥
Attained human life through guru`s teachings by God`s grace.
ਬਾਹਰਿਮੂਲਿਨਖੋਜੀਐਘਰਮਾਹਿਬਿਧਾਤਾ॥
Don’t look outside; the architect of destiny is inside.
ਮਨਮੁਖਹਰਿਮੰਦਰਕੀਸਾਰਨਜਾਣਨੀਤਿਨੀਜਨਮੁਗਵਾਤਾ॥
The self-willed does not know where God lives; he wastes away his life.
ਸਭਮਹਿਇਕੁਵਰਤਦਾਗੁਰਸਬਦੀਪਾਇਆਜਾਈ॥੧੨॥
God pervades all; he is realized through guru`s teaching. ||12||

ਜੈਸਾਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸੁਣੀਦਾਤੈਸੋਹੀਮੈਡੀਠੁ॥
As I heard about the true guru, so I see Him.
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆਮੇਲੇਪ੍ਰਭੂਹਰਿਦਰਗਹਕਾਬਸੀਠੁ
He re-unites the separated with God; He is the lawyer at God’s court.
ਹਰਿਨਾਮੋਮੰਤ੍ਰੁਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਦਾਕਟੇਹਉਮੈਰੋਗੁ॥
He implants the lesson of Lord’s Name and eradicates the sickness of ego.
ਨਾਨਕਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਤਿਨਾਮਿਲਾਇਆਜਿਨਾਧੁਰੇਪਇਆਸੰਜੋਗੁ॥੧॥
O Nanak, those with a pre-ordained destiny meet the guru.

ਮੇਰੈਅੰਤਰਿਲੋਚਾਮਿਲਣਕੀਕਿਉਪਾਵਾਪ੍ਰਭਤੋਹਿ॥
I have yearning to meet with you; how can I find You O God?
ਕੋਈਐਸਾਸਜਣੁਲੋੜਿਲਹੁਜੋਮੇਲੇਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁਮੋਹਿ॥
I will find a friend, who will unite me with my beloved.
ਗੁਰਿਪੂਰੈਮੇਲਾਇਆਜਤਦੇਖਾਤਤਸੋਇ॥
The perfect guru has united me with Him; wherever I look, there He is.
ਜਨਨਾਨਕਸੋਪ੍ਰਭੁਸੇਵਿਆਤਿਸੁਜੇਵਡੁਅਵਰੁਨਕੋਇ॥੨॥
Servant Nanak serves that God; there is no other as great as Him

Be kind, O my Lord that I spend my life in the company of saints.

Those who forget You, are born and die again and again;

Listening to His praises my mind and body blossom;
reciting God it gets dyed deep red.
ਪੰਧਿਜੁਲੰਦੜੀਮੇਰਾਅੰਦਰੁਠੰਢਾਗੁਰਦਰਸਨੁਦੇਖਿਨਿਹਾਲੀ॥੧॥
Walking on that path, I am soothed; seeing the guru I am content. ||1||
ਮਃ੫॥ Fifth Mahalla:
ਹਠਮੰਝਾਹੂਮੈਮਾਣਕੁਲਧਾ॥
I have found the jewel in my heart.
ਮੁਲਿਨਘਿਧਾਮੈਕੂਸਤਿਗੁਰਿਦਿਤਾ॥
I did not buy it; my guru gave it to me.
ਢੂੰਢਵਞਾਈਥੀਆਥਿਤਾ॥
My search has ended and I have become stable.
ਜਨਮੁਪਦਾਰਥੁਨਾਨਕਜਿਤਾ॥੨॥
O Nanak, I have conquered this priceless human life.

ਹਰਿਭਇਓਖਾਂਡੁਰੇਤੁਮਹਿਬਿਖਰਿਓਹਸਤਨੀਂਚੁਨਿਓਨਜਾਈ॥
The Lord is like sugar spilled in the sand; cannot be picked by hand.
ਕਹਿਕਮੀਰਕੁਲਜਾਤਿਪਾਂਤਿਤਜਿਚੀਟੀਹੋਇਚੁਨਿਖਾਈ॥੨॥੩॥੧੨॥
Says Kabeer, give up your ancestry, social status and honor;
be tiny like an ant; then pick and eat it.

ਬਾਨਾਰਸੀਤਪੁਕਰੈਉਲਟਿਤੀਰਥਮਰੈਅਗਨਿਦਹੈਕਾਇਆਕਲਪੁਕੀਜੈ॥
Some practice austerities at Banaras, or hang upside-down, die at
a sacred shrine, sit in the middle of fire; do such practices;
ਅਸੁਮੇਧਜਗੁਕੀਜੈਸੋਨਾਗਰਭਦਾਨੁਦੀਜੈਰਾਮਨਾਮਸਰਿਤਊਨਪੂਜੈ॥੧॥
Perform the horse-sacrificial ceremony, or donate lot
of gold; nothing equals reciting God’s name. ||1||
ਛੋਡਿਛੋਡਿਰੇਪਾਖੰਡੀਮਨਕਪਟੁਨਕੀਜੈ॥
O hypocrite, abandon your hypocrisy; do not practice deception.
ਹਰਿਕਾਨਾਮੁਨਿਤਨਿਤਹਿਲੀਜੈ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
Recite God’s name all the time.

ਪ੍ਰਭਕੇਸੇਵਕਬਹੁਤੁਅਤਿਨੀਕੇਮਨਿਸਰਧਾਕਰਿਹਰਿਧਾਰੇ॥
God’s servants are sublime and special; they enshrine God in the mind.
ਮੇਰੇਪ੍ਰਭਿਸਰਧਾਭਗਤਿਮਨਿਭਾਵੈਜਨਕੀਪੈਜਸਵਾਰੇ॥੧॥
Faith and devotion please my God; He saves the honor of His devotees. ||1||
ਹਰਿਹਰਿਸੇਵਕੁਸੇਵਾਲਾਗੈਸਭੁਦੇਖੈਬ੍ਰਹਮਪਸਾਰੇ॥
God’s servant serves God and visualizes God’s creation and boundaries
ਏਕੁਪੁਰਖੁਇਕੁਨਦਰੀਆਵੈਸਭਏਕਾਨਦਰਿਨਿਹਾਰੇ॥੨॥
God is one and only one and sees all with one eye. ||2||
ਹਰਿਪ੍ਰਭੁਠਾਕੁਰੁਰਵਿਆਸਭਠਾਈਸਭੁਚੇਰੀਜਗਤੁਸਮਾਰੇ॥
God pervades all and looks after His devotees.
ਆਪਿਦਇਆਲੁਦਇਆਦਾਨੁਦੇਵੈਵਿਚਿਪਾਥਰਕੀਰੇਕਾਰੇ॥੩॥
The kind Lord kindly bestows His kindness as gifts even to worms

ਹਰਿਹਰਿਆਪਿਮਿਲਾਇਗੁਰੁਮੈਦਸੇਹਰਿਧਨੁਰਾਸਿ॥
O my guru, please unite me with God and show me Godly wealth.
ਬਿਨੁਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੇਮੁਨਲਭਈਜਨਵੇਖਹੁਮਨਿਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ॥
Without the guru; love does not well up; check it out;
ਹਰਿਗੁਰਵਿਚਿਆਪੁਰਖਿਆਹਰਿਮੇਲੇਗੁਰਸਾਬਾਸਿ॥੨॥
The Lord dwells in the guru; realize God through guru’s praises. ||2||
ਸਾਗਰਭਗਤਿਭੰਡਾਰਹਰਿਪੂਰੇਸਤਿਗੁਰਪਾਸਿ
The ocean of the treasure of God’s worship rests with the perfect guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਤੁਠਾਖੋਲਿਦੇਇਮੁਖਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹਰਿਪਰਗਾਸਿ॥
When it pleases the guru, He opens the treasure and the guru-willed are enlightened.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿਭਾਗਵਿਹੂਣਿਆਤਿਖਮੁਈਆਕੰਧੀਪਾਸਿ॥੩॥
The unfortunate self-willed die of thirst on the bank of a river; ||3||
ਗੁਰੁਦਾਤਾਦਾਤਾਰੁਹੈਹਉਮਾਗਉਦਾਨੁਗੁਰਪਾਸਿ॥
The guru is the great giver; I beg for this gift from the guru;
ਚਿਰੀਵਿਛੁੰਨਾਮੇਲਿਪ੍ਰਭਮੈਮਨਿਤਨਿਵਡੜੀਆਸ॥
I am separated from God for a long time; please unite with God my mind and body long for it
ਗੁਰਭਾਵੈਸੁਣਿਬੇਨਤੀਜਨਨਾਨਕਕੀਅਰਦਾਸਿ॥੪॥੨॥੪॥
If it pleases You, O my guru, please listen to servant Nanak’s prayer

ਜਿਨਿਰਚਿਰਚਿਆਪੁਰਖਿਬਿਧਾਤੈਨਾਲੇਹਉਮੈਪਾਈ॥
Lord, the architect of destiny created you; He also gave you ego.
ਜਨਮਮਰਣੁਉਸਹੀਕਉਹੈਰੇਓਹਾਆਵੈਜਾਈ॥੩॥
That causes you to take birth and death and keep coming and going. ||3||
ਬਰਨੁਚਿਹਨੁਨਾਹੀਕਿਛੁਰਚਨਾਮਿਥਿਆਸਗਲਪਸਾਰਾ॥
There is no color or symbol of the creation; it is all imaginary;
ਭਣਤਿਨਾਨਕੁਜਬਖੇਲੁਉਝਾਰੈਤਬਏਕੈਏਕੰਕਾਰਾ॥੪॥੪॥
Prays Nanak; when He finishes the play; then there is only one God.
ਰੇਨਰਇਨਬਿਧਿਪਾਰਿਪਰਾਇ॥
O man, this is way, you shall cross over to the other side (obtain salvation).
ਧਿਆਇਹਰਿਜੀਉਹੋਇਮਿਰਤਕੁਤਿਆਗਿਦੂਜਾਭਾਉ॥ਰਹਾਉਦੂਜਾ॥੨॥੧੧॥
Recite God and be humble and give up duality.

ਛੋਡਿਸਗਲਸਿਆਣਪਾਮਿਲਿਸਾਧਤਿਆਗਿਗੁਮਾਨੁ॥
Abandon clever ideas and eliminate self-pride meeting the devotees.
ਅਵਰੁਸਭੁਕਿਛੁਮਿਥਿਆਰਸਨਾਰਾਮਰਾਮਵਖਾਨੁ॥੧॥
Everything else is imaginary; recite God God with your tongue. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇਮਨਕਰਨਸੁਣਿਹਰਿਨਾਮੁ॥
O my mind, with your ears; listen to the Name of God.
ਮਿਟਹਿਅਘਤੇਰੇਜਨਮਜਨਮਕੇਕਵਨੁਬਪੁਰੋਜਾਮੁ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
The sins of your many lifetimes shall be erased;
forget about the poor devil of death? ||1||Pause||
ਚਲਤਬੈਸਤਸੋਵਤਜਾਗਤਗੁਰਮੰਤ੍ਰੁਰਿਦੈਚਿਤਾਰਿ॥
While walking sitting sleeping and awake; recite guru’s word (lesson) in your mind.
ਚਰਣਸਰਣਭਜੁਸੰਗਿਸਾਧੂਭਵਸਾਗਰਉਤਰਹਿਪਾਰਿ॥੧॥
Recite God humbly in devotee’s company and cross over the world ocean.

ਅੰਤਰਿਅਗਨਿਨਗੁਰਬਿਨੁਬੂਝੈਬਾਹਰਿਪੂਅਰਤਾਪੈ॥
The inner fire does no extinguish without the guru; the fire still burns outside.
ਗੁਰਸੇਵਾਬਿਨੁਭਗਤਿਨਹੋਵੀਕਿਉਕਰਿਚੀਨਸਿਆਪੈ॥
Without serving the guru, worship is not possible;
how can one search his soul any other way.
ਨਿੰਦਾਕਰਿਕਰਿਨਰਕਨਿਵਾਸੀਅੰਤਰਿਆਤਮਜਾਪੈ॥
Slandering others, one goes to hell. God abides inside.
ਅਠਸਠਿਤੀਰਥਭਰਮਿਵਿਗੂਚਹਿਕਿਉਮਲੁਧੋਪੈਪਾਪੈ॥੩॥
He goes on pilgrimage to sixty-eight shrines. He is ruined by doubt.
How can he wash the filth of sins? ||3||
ਛਾਣੀਖਾਕੁਬਿਭੂਤਚੜਾਈਮਾਇਆਕਾਮਗੁਜੋਹੈ॥
He sifts the ashes and applies to the body; but the worldly wealth robs him.
ਅੰਤਰਿਬਾਹਰਿਏਕੁਨਜਾਣੈਸਾਚੁਕਹੇਤੇਛੋਹੈ
He does not see God inside or out; if I say the truth, he gets angry.
ਪਾਠੁਪੜੈਮੁਖਿਝੂਠੋਬੋਲੈਨਿਗੁਰੇਕੀਮਤਿਓਹੈ
He reads the scriptures, but tells lies; that is the thinking of a person without the guru
ਨਾਮੁਨਜਪਈਕਿਉਸੁਖੁਪਾਵੈਬਿਨੁਨਾਵੈਕਿਉਸੋਹੈ॥੪॥
How can he find peace without reciting God;
how will he look good without God’s name? ||4||

ਮੂਰਖੁਸਿਆਣਾਏਕੁਹੈਏਕਜੋਤਿਦੁਇਨਾਉ
Foolish and wise are same; they have the same soul but two different names.
ਮੂਰਖਾਸਿਰਿਮੂਰਖੁਹੈਜਿਮੰਨੇਨਾਹੀਨਾਉ॥੨॥
Those who do not believe in God’s name are the real fools. ||2||
ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੈਨਾਉਪਾਈਐਬਿਨੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਪਲੈਨਪਾਇ॥
God’s name is talked about at guru’s refuge but it does not sink in without the guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਕੈਭਾਣੈਮਨਿਵਸੈਤਾਅਹਿਨਿਸਿਰਹੈਲਿਵਲਾਇ॥੩॥
It enshrines in the mind by guru’s grace; then devotees enjoy forever. ||3||

ਅਨਿਕਪ੍ਰਾਛਤਮਿਟਹਿਖਿਨਮਹਿਰਿਦੈਜਪਿਭਗਵਾਨ॥
Reciting God lovingly in the mind eliminates all sins in a moment.
ਪਾਵਨਾਤੇਮਹਾਪਾਵਨਕੋਟਿਦਾਨਇਸਨਾਨ॥੭॥
Reciting Him makes one purest of the pure and is blessed
with merits of millions of donations and cleansing baths. ||7||
ਬਲਬੁਧਿਸੁਧਿਪਰਾਣਸਰਬਸੁਸੰਤਨਾਕੀਰਾਸਿ॥
God is power, intellect, life, wealth, and everything for the saints.
ਬਿਸਰੁਨਾਹੀਨਿਮਖਮਨਤੇਨਾਨਕਕੀਅਰਦਾਸਿ॥੮॥੨॥
May I never forget Him from my mind, this is Nanak’s prayer. ||8||2||
