By the Grace of the One Supreme Being, The Eternal,
The All-pervading Purusha, The Creator, Without Fear, Without Hate,
the Being Beyond Time, Non-incarnated, Self-existent, The Enlightener.
MEDITATIONS
True in the Beginning, True in the Primeval age
True He is and True He shall be. [1]
Thinking avails not, how so hard one thinks;
Nor silence avails, howsoever one shrinks
Into oneself. Nor hunger goes
With the (Pleasure) loads of the worlds.
Of a myriad cleverness, not one works.
How then to be True? How rend the Veil of sham, untruth?
His Will (forsooth)
Inborn in us, ingrained,
Thou follow.
(Thus is Truth attained). [1]

How can we be true and how can the screen of untruth be rent?
By obeying, O Nanak! the pre-ordained order of the Lord of will.

2 SUPPOSITIONS THAT ARE NOT SAID BY GURU SAHIB. LORD OF WILL? - LORDS WILL IS CORRECT!

He is the Sole Supreme Being; of eternal manifestation;
Creator, immanent Reality; Without Fear;
Without Rancour; Timeless Form; Unincarnated;
Self-Existent; Realized by grace of the holy Preceptor.
Japu (Prayer-Chant)
In primal Time, in all Time, was the Creator;
Nothing is real but the Eternal.
Nothing shall last but the Eternal. (1)
Ritual purification, though million-fold, may not purify the mind;
Nor may absorption in trance still it, however long and continuous.
Possessing worlds multiple quenches not the rage of avarice and desire.
A thousand million feats of intellect bring not emancipation.
How then to become true to the Creator?
how demolish the wall of illusion?
Through obedience to His Ordinance and Will.
Saith Nanak :This blessing too is pre-ordained. (1)

Pritam Singh Chahil Translation:

The Creator of all is One, the only One. Truth is his name.
He is the doer of everything. He is without fear and without enmity.
His form is immortal. He is unborn and self-illumined.
He is realized by Guru's grace.
MEDITATE
He was True in the beginning. He was True through all ages.
He is True even now. Nanak says, He shall ever be True.
1. By pondering, one cannot have the conception of God even though
one may think million times. Even though one be silent and remain
constantly absorbed, He cannot be known by this siIence.

The hunger of the hungry does not appease even though one may collect
loads of worldly valuables. One may have millions of skills but none goes
with him in the hereafter. How can one become truthful and dispel the veil
of illusion? Nanak says by obeying the pre-ordained order of the Lord and
surrendering to His Will. 1.

One Universal Creator God.
The Name is Truth.

By thinking, He cannot be reduced to thought, even by thinking hundreds
of thousands of times. By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained,
even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within. The hunger of the hungry
is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly goods. Hundreds of
thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in
the end. So how can one become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be
torn away? O Nanak, He has written that you shall obey the Hukam of His
Command, and walk in the Way of His Will. II 1 II

Which words should we utter with our mouths by hearing which, He may begin to bear us love?

Early in the morning utter the True Name and reflect upon God's greatness.

THIS IS WHERE I TOTALLY DISAGREE. KARMA AS DISCUSSED ON " THE GURDIKH PROJECT ON REONCARMNATION" ALSO MEANS BLESSINGS IN URDU. NOW WHICH DEFINTION TO USE HERE?

IN LAST THREE PAURI'S GURU SAHIB IS TALKING ABOTU HUKAM. SO WE ARE UNDER HUKAM AND SHOULD REALIZE/FOLLOW IT. GURU JI IS SHOWING HOW EVERYTING IS WITHIIN HUKAM.

NOW IN OTHER PLACES GURU SAHIB REFERS TO STONES AS A "JUNI" AND ALSO LEAVES OF TREES. DO YOU THINK THEY ARE ABLE TO DO GOOD/BAD ACTIONS - NOPE ANY EDUCATED KID WOULD FIGURE THIS OUT AND GURU SAHIB IS FAR BEYOND. SO THE ONLY MEANING APPLICABLE IS BLESIINGS. I.E. WITH BLESSINGS WE RECIEVE CLOTHING/ROBE ETC AND THORUGH GRACE LIBERATION AS ALL IS WITHIN HUKAM. NEXT LINE MAKES IT CLEAR:

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥
O Nanak, know this well: the True One Himself is All. ||4||

- IF ALL IS ONE HIMSELF THEN WHO IS DOING GOOD AND BAD ACTIONS. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT WE AS HUMANS HAVE GIVEN MUCH HIGHER THINKING ABILITY AND SO WE HAVE MORE OF FREEWILL TO CHOOSE BETWEEN CHOICES, BUT THAT ALSO WITHIN HUKAM.

I have found problems with Sant Singh Khalsa Ji, Manmohan Singh Ji, Gurbachan Singh Talib Ji and Sahib Singh ji on the following points.
1. They assume about the idea instead of rmaining within the continuity of Guru's thought in totality
2. They limits the translation to the word meaning instead of disciphering it in the relevant context
3. Many times, meaning is given based on prevailed convictions but due to Gurbani in poetic form, that cripples the meanings because a lot of stories are forcibly attached to Guru Shabadas.
Gurbani is addressd to different levels of the people, that is very important to understand bfore we comment on those. I cannot give examples at this time, at another time I will.

IN LAST THREE PAURI'S GURU SAHIB IS TALKING ABOTU HUKAM. SO WE ARE UNDER HUKAM AND SHOULD REALIZE/FOLLOW IT. GURU JI IS SHOWING HOW EVERYTING IS WITHIIN HUKAM.

NOW IN OTHER PLACES GURU SAHIB REFERS TO STONES AS A "JUNI" AND ALSO LEAVES OF TREES. DO YOU THINK THEY ARE ABLE TO DO GOOD/BAD ACTIONS - NOPE ANY EDUCATED KID WOULD FIGURE THIS OUT AND GURU SAHIB IS FAR BEYOND. SO THE ONLY MEANING APPLICABLE IS BLESIINGS. I.E. WITH BLESSINGS WE RECIEVE CLOTHING/ROBE ETC AND THORUGH GRACE LIBERATION AS ALL IS WITHIN HUKAM. NEXT LINE MAKES IT CLEAR:

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥
O Nanak, know this well: the True One Himself is All. ||4||

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥
Know thus, O Nanak! that the True One is all by Himself.

- IF ALL IS ONE HIMSELF THEN WHO IS DOING GOOD AND BAD ACTIONS. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT WE AS HUMANS HAVE GIVEN MUCH HIGHER THINKING ABILITY AND SO WE HAVE MORE OF FREEWILL TO CHOOSE BETWEEN CHOICES, BUT THAT ALSO WITHIN HUKAM.

I am posting below the translation /interpretation by Dr. Sahib Singh ji. Hope it should make things clear to Gurmukhi knowing sangat. Many of the doubts raised above should stand clarified.
But we still have the right to interpret things as per our understanding.

Good to see you posting. Thanks for posting the Punjabi understanding by Professor Sant Siingh. I was hoping that there would be some Punjabi translations offered because there are forum members who read Punjabi better than English and the thread may have interest for them.

If anyone comes along who can translate the professor's words into English, they should do that. :)

I am not sure if you mean joonee when writing "juni" in your post. My confusion is based on the fact that transliterations are unreliable. I have copied a verse below with joonee in red and if that is the word you mean then joonee and janaam are used as synonyms in the English translation, by the translator -- as two words having similar meanings depending on the context of the sentence or phrase in which they are used.

ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੂਨੀ ਨਿਤਿ ਪਉਦਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
bhaageheen sathigur nehee paaeiaa manamukh garabh joonee nith poudhaa jeeo ||3||
The unfortunate ones do not find the True Guru; the self-willed manmukhs continually endure reincarnation through the womb. ||3||

My understanding of "janam" is that it is the more general sense of "coming" and "joonee" in context is closer in meaning to "birth." ajoonee in the Mool Mantar means beyond birth. In English, when you are thinking of reincarnation then "coming" again and again or being "born" again and again are inter-changeable. This understanding is for the translation only.

Janam= birth, life time,, meaning in punjabi= padaesh, jeevan,Juni=place of origin, birth, category of life, meaning in punjabi= jeevan, padesh etc
These words are actually synonymous; however, in different context, they can convey meaning slightly different way, for example” us ne bure kamma ch apnee juni khrab kar laee( He has ruined his life by doing bad deeds), here it conveys meaning of Juni as life( Zindgi/jeevan)

Khote dee juni ch paina bura hai( being donkey is bad) Here slightly hint is at category of life.
Janam= padaesh, birth, Jeevan ( birth, life)= us de janam dee kamaee kho gaee( His life saving is lost) Here janam is used as life not birth.

It depends in what context “ Janam and Juni” are used; however, they are synonymous .

I do not want to comment upon that you have stated as it lacks the depth of Punjabi. The querist has sought the difference between 'Joonie' and 'janam' .

These are not synonyms.

Jonnie = Taking births and rebirths with emphasis on transmigration from one kind of being to another like from man to cow or to elephant and then to an ant and so on and so forth.....till one reappears in the format of human being with HIS grace.
Gurmat states that there are 8.4 million kinds of such migrations/births and rebirths and jonies. Hope you are clear on this. Human joonie is stated to be the Best.

Janam= Means Simple Birth in any form.
Due to my poor english I could do that was feasible.
