Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

I do not want to comment upon that you have stated as it lacks the depth of Punjabi. The querist has sought the difference between 'Joonie' and 'janam' .

These are not synonyms.

Jonnie = Taking births and rebirths with emphasis on transmigration from one kind of being to another like from man to cow or to elephant and then to an ant and so on and so forth.....till one reappears in the format of human being with HIS grace.
Gurmat states that there are 8.4 million kinds of such migrations/births and rebirths and jonies. Hope you are clear on this. Human joonie is stated to be the Best.

Janam= Means Simple Birth in any form.
Due to my poor english I could do that was feasible.
May be some time in the evening.[ I am in the office right now;hence cannot spend more time.]

Forgiveness for this is entreated again.
Added immediately after posting.
Oh ! I see that Pk 70 has already posted something. Let it be. Two opinions are always good.

Please consult "Mahan Kosh Encyclopedia, Gurbani Dictionaries and Punjabi/English Dictionaries. ", you will find out, what you are saying, is only one kind of use of these words

Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

Respectfully forum members:

Source for definitions is Dictionary of Guru Granth Sahib, by Professor Surinder Singh Kholi, Publishers Singh Brothers, Amritsar 1996/2005

Joonee or juni = Birth (from the womb)
Janam(a) = Birth

And as pointed out by respected forum member pk70 ji, the meanings differ according to the way they are used in context. :)

While understanding Gurbani, shear common sense is not enough, if that is what you want, please keep doing Sikh 80 jio:)

Thank you sir ! He tells to all better way, some time "I-force" violates something; He is nirvair, it is not possible that He tells better to some and bad others. Denying facts and throwing on the Lord is beyond my understanding. I wish you all the best though :)

Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

Pk70 ji,

it is also fine.
May He bless you with the understanding that we are all at different levels. May be you are at much higher level and i am a novice. I am sure that I am a novice only. Hence I seek the path that He tells me.

I do seek guidance from you much more than any body else but that hardly deprives me of the right to maintain some views or form them with passage of time. You have been kind enough to tell me as to how we can employ 'jeo'. I am grateful .

plus

We all have different roots and we differ at times. It is also o.k. I shall share with you that you intend me to do. Kindly give me some time.

I shall always ask for the prerogative to seek your blessings and guidance as and when need arises and hope you shall be as graceful and kind as you have been.

satnam ji.:)

Sri Granth: Search Results

Dear ax057,
I am a learner like you. I am not a practitioner. Learning has been a very slow process for me even though I know basic Gurmukhi.

I have posted the links for 'janam' after feeding in Gurmukhi in the search facility at the site suggested by you. I did paste these links on MS word file. The first link for 'Janam' works fine with my browser.
['Janam' besides the usual meaning of Birth also stands for "Life' as well. It is seemingly a Hindi word as well. ]

The second link is for 'juni'. But it is erratic. Yes, of course, I want to help you out.You have put in lot of labor. I know that link would not work with your browser as well. Do forgive me right now. I shall try to paste some lines when I sit tomorrow evening at this time.

In the meantime, kindly tell me if you know Punjabi and It shall facilitate the job at my end.

I see that you have also put in lot of labor.Pl. do inform me if it has worked on your computer.

Regards!

Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

My view is that translater is mixing "fer fer" with "fir fir". The first is "again and again" and second is "wondring and wondring". Her it is fir fir due to the siari not laan. This is how fer fer is spelled - ਫੇਰ ਫੇਰ = again and again.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

ਬਿਨੁ = without
ਸਤਗੁਰ = true guru
ਸੁਖੁ = happiness
= no/not
ਪਾਵਈ = achieve/get
ਫਿਰਿ = wondering
ਫਿਰਿ = wondering
ਜੋਨੀ = birth through womb
ਪਾਹਿ = get/acheive

Here one is not able to come to conlusion that is Guru sahib talking about past or future.

Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

It would make more sense to take the line in past tense, since it is in coherence with res of shabad. in the lines above this line guru sahib is talking about liberations and how it is achieved. Then in this stanza guru sahib says that you may have all pleasure and kingdoms but still real hapiness does not come without true guru, wondring wondering you have got birth through womb.

ਚਿਤਿ = remember

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ = Supreme Lord
ਤਾ = then
ਸਰਪ = snakeਕੀ = that
ਜੂਨਿ = birth from womb?
ਗਇਆ = went

Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

Now the question arises is there a difference in ਜੋਨੀ vs ਜੂਨਿ?

Re: Translations and Transliterations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Issues and Controvers

ਯੋਨਿ (yoni)- sanskrit = ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਤਪੱਤਿ ਦਾ ਸਥਾਨ - place where creature is created!
ਜੂਨਿ - I think is refers to differnt existances/forms, because elsewhere in gurbani it is also said that even a rock is "jun".

ਜੋਨੀ - I think is for place of creation e.g. womb etc.

ਚਿਤਿ ਆਇਓ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਸਰਪ ਕੀ ਜੂਨਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੬॥
चिति न आइओ पारब्रहमु ता सरप की जूनि गइआ ॥६॥

and yet, if you do not come to remember the Supreme Lord God, you shall be reincarnated as a snake. ||6||

here the meaining is not that you "wil/shall" be incarnated as a snake, but - if god is not remembered by then you have gone/left/die as a snake's exitance/form - lower level animal with less consiousness = comparison = analogy by guru sahib! ਗਇਆ = specifically in past tense!
